Santa Margherita Ligure Hotels

From its green and rolling backdrop and colourful Liberty facades, to its palm-lined seafront where shiny yachts sway on the sparkling marina – Santa Margherita Ligure could be a painting. An old-fashioned seaside resort on the Italian Riviera, it’s loved for its blissfully balmy weather, breathtaking surrounds, and historic hotels. Here you can spend your days unwinding on a beach, relaxing in a quaint waterfront café, or venturing out into the verdant splendour of Regional Natural Park of Portofino.

Things to see

Whilst Santa Margherita Ligure has its own small beach, you’ll find the most idyllic stretches of sand just out of town, including Praggi Beach near Portofino. Tucked within a small bay framed by leafy cliffs, the petite paradise boasts ivory white sand and glassy teal waters. Smattered with historical monuments, one of the town’s oldest is Santa Margherita Ligure Castle. Perched on a little cliff looking out to sea, the quaint stone fort dates back to 1550, when it used to defend the town from pirates. Set within elegant grounds draped in fragrant florals, Villa Durazzo is one of the resort’s most exquisite historical buildings. After a stroll about the gardens you can tour the manor’s opulent interior, before enjoying a glass of wine on its terrace. The Abbey of Cervara can be found on the coastal route to Portofino. Dating back to 1364, the complex features a richly adorned Benedictine church, formal gardens, and a 16th century tower.

Much of the action is centred on the shimmering harbour, which comes to life every morning with the bustle of local fisherman bringing their catch ashore. Lining the palm studded seafront is where you’ll find many of the town’s best cafés, bars, and restaurants – all of which offer glittering views of the ocean.
