Vancouver HotelsA city born in the middle of a remote Canadian wilderness, Vancouver has flourished into a cosmopolitan metropolis. Yet the focus is still on the natural environment, with beaches, mountains, and forests providing just as many attractions as the city itself. In the city, arty exhibits, galleries, and markets are mainstays of the cultural scene, while Vancouver’s young, independent designers are taking over the shops. Combined with Vancouver’s exciting, diverse nightlife, this is a city with so much to explore. Things to seeStart in Gastown, the place where Vancouver was founded, when an Englishman in a boat rowed to shore and started a pub. The area maintains its origins, with red-brick Victorian architecture, old-fashioned trolley cars and, of course, a great number of pubs. Then wander through modern downtown, with its sleek, high-rise buildings. There are several shopping centers here, as well as the grand Vancouver Art Gallery. To get across the city, be sure to make use of the SkyTrain, a quick form of transport which provides great views as you sail over the city. An even more spectacular view can be had from Vancouver’s peak – Grouse Mountain. Ascend by gondola or take on the grueling trail up and look down at the sparkling city and undulating coastline. If you want to pick up some souvenirs, head to Granville Island, where you’ll find local craft items, as well as street food. Hotels in VancouverVancouver is a city with class, and its top-end luxury hotels are worth blowing the budget for: in sumptuous, art-deco or regency-style grandeur, you’ll be able to swan about in an opulent suite and make the most of the full spa services. A couple of hotels even offer limo services to transport you around the city. If your budget won’t stretch that far, there are plenty of mid-range and cheap Vancouver hotels to choose from, with amenities including free WiFi and onsite restaurants. The mid-range hotels are generally well-located in the center, so the main sights will be within easy reach. Where to stayMost visitors choose to stay in Vancouver’s downtown area, which is the most vibrant section of the city. Concentrated on a small peninsula, it boasts the waterfront, as well as all the iconic sights of Vancouver. There is a mix of luxury and mid-range hotels to choose from. For a little more tranquility, head to the edge of Stanley Park, to the north of downtown. Here, well-priced hotels with old-fashioned elegance overlook the windswept beauty of Vancouver’s main park. To find cheap hotels, stay just south of downtown, where there are some charming guesthouses available. How to get to VancouverVancouver is well served by the Vancouver International Airport, located just 30 minutes from downtown. It receives flights from all over the world and is a main hub in North America. Getting into Vancouver couldn’t be easier: the SkyTrain shuttles passengers from the airport to downtown, departing every 4 minutes. It’s the quickest and cheapest option. Taxis are also readily available, but are much more expensive. If coming from nearby, it’s possible to drive to Vancouver – Seattle is the closest big city, 3 hours away. Cars are not particularly useful in downtown Vancouver, but several hotels do offer free parking.
