Exploring Dubai

Dubai is a prime tourist destination that has grown to epic proportions over the last few years, today boasting mind-boggling high towers, world-class hotels and all encompassing mega shopping malls. What’s more, the rich emirate has an excellent infrastructure and is bathed in sunshine year-round, perfect for those looking to relax on its dazzling beaches and dine al fresco style.

Though becoming more and more modern and filling up with skyscrapers, Dubai retains old areas, such as the historic Shindagha and Bastakiya districts, located near the Creek. They come with traditional Arab architecture and the best preserved (and revamped) ancient houses and museums from which to learn more about the history of Dubai’s humble beginnings.

Farther out to sea are the newer Palm Islands projects, with their super exclusive hotels and villas. More modest accommodation options can be had in the Bur Dubai neighbourhood, including hotels such as the four-star Majestic Hotel Tower.

Sights nearby

Dubai is not swamped with sights, but there are a growing number of family attractions and all encompassing shopping malls within reach of the hotels and tourist amenities. Jumeirah Beach runs much of the length of the city.

Burj Khalifa
A highlight for many visitors to Dubai is the 828-metre tall Burj Khalifa Tower topping off the Downtown Dubai project near Dubai’s financial centre. It has a super-high observation floor as well as a string of high end hotels and many superb restaurants. There is even a nightclub here, while next door is the massive Dubai Mall. The Ramada Downtown Dubai is a popular four-star hotel in the grounds with views over the manicured park and lake.

Jumeirah Beach
Dubai’s main stretch of sand is always busy with sunbathers and water sports fans. It stretches for miles in the diverse Jumeirah district and is backed by the friendly Jumeirah Beach Park, which itself comes with children's play areas and cooler sunbathing. The Residence the Walk is a fun area of shops and eateries near the northern section of the beach, while the City Premiere Hotel Apartment offers good four-star accommodation.

Global Village
The Global Village at the City of Arabia, farther out of town, lays on this huge winter carnival that features pavilions from countries around the world showing off aspects of their culture. There are prominent landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Forbidden City, along with rides on Ferris wheels and suchlike, while tourists can also pick up some good bargains. The event usually runs from November to February.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

The shopping has always been good in Dubai, from right back to its early days as a trading port of spices, gold and pearls. Some of the best malls anywhere grace the streets here, many even containing big hotels and side attractions that also boast good eating. There is always somewhere to head to for dining out, especially in the Deira and Bur Dubai districts, though all districts have their ‘eat street’.

Public transport

Public transport is getting better, with a large, though very busy bus network supplemented by two long metro lines. You can buy a day pass to cover the buses and metro trains, while meter taxis are even reliable here and every big hotel has them standing by. Water taxis and ferries ply the Creek, too, or you can drive via tunnel or bridge. Many tourists choose to rent cars in Dubai as the city is quite spread out and the road network and supply of car rental firms is good. A monorail now serves the Palm Jumeirah palm island.
