Exploring Bangkok

It is easy to see why Bangkok is such a popular destination for many travellers from all over the world. For one, the capital of Thailand is a convenient entry and exit point in Southeast Asia. Second, the food scene here is legendary. You can go for cheap street food or to some of the best fine dining restaurants in Asia. It is a perfect picture of a Southeast Asian city: hot, bustling, and chaotic.

Then again, travellers may just come here solely for the wide array of shopping and retail therapy. This is especially the case in the district of Siam Square. Unlike many squares or plazas in the world, however, Bangkok's Siam Square is not a wide open space but rather a street block filled with shops, boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. Around Siam Square, you will find behemoth shopping malls which have become favorites of both locals and tourists.

Sights nearby

Many of the high-end and five-star accommodation in Bangkok can be found in Siam Square, with the exception of a few, like the Le Meridien Bangkok or the Shangri-la Hotel, which are found in the adjacent district of Silom. Staying at these properties provides you with easy access to some of the best shopping in town.

Mahboonkrong Center (MBK)
Locating this huge shopping mall is easy, but finding your way out of the maze of shops inside of it may prove tricky! The MBK Center, near Siam Square, is an eight-storey shopping mall. Here, you will find everything from clothing to home furnishing, to accessories. The mall is most popular, however, for its electronics and IT centr on the fourth floor. This area is dedicated solely to smartphones, netbooks, tablets, cameras, and many other gadgets. When hungry from all that shopping, you can head to the food courts on the fifth and sixth floors.

CentralWorld
As large as MBK Center is, it is actually not the largest mall in the city. That title goes to CentralWorld, a shopping complex so huge it is considered the sixth largest such complex in the world. Many of the shops in CentralWorld cater to a sophisticated market, with brand names and designer boutiques populating its corridors. Aside from shops, CentralWorld has an activity square, a popular venue for events and shows, cinemas, an ice skating rink, and various food courts.

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum
When done shopping, you can head to Bangkok's very own Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, located in Siam Discovery shopping mall in front of Siam Square. The figures of the usual prominent persons, like Barak Obama and Steve Jobs, can be found here. On the Thai side, visitors will see wax figures of Thai royalty, including the Prince Father and the Princess Mother.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Various food courts can be found within the numerous shopping malls found in the district. Siam Paragon shopping mall has a food court on its first level. There is also FoodLoft and Central Foodhall food courts close to the Skytrain station of Chit Lom. Within Siam Square itself, you will see lanes crowded by street side food vendors along with small restaurants and cafés.

Public transport

Siam Square is often considered Bangkok's downtown area. Thus, many roads and public transport systems converge here. The Skytrain has stops for Siam Square and the National Stadium, which is located right beside the MBK Center. The Bangkok Bus Rapid Transit also passes through here, connecting the main points of the district.
