Tourists who are here for their first time simply have to see the National Mall, which is a National Park filled with attractions such as the Washington Monument, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool and the National Museum of National History. Some people will be surprised to know that this city is a great hub for performances of music from all genres. The Kennedy Center takes the cake when it comes to classical performances, and is where you’ll find the Washington National Opera and National Symphony Orchestra in residence. Major music venues for pop and rock include the 9:30club and the Black Cat, both of which are in Shaw, a district towards the north.

Washington D.C. Accommodation is more than decent, and has several options for visitors on budgets of any elasticity. Popular accommodation choices are near the Smithsonian, but since it is relatively easy to get around the city using the metro, it’s possible to stay in the close-in suburbs with little inconvenience. Upscale hotels can be found close to the National Mall for those willing to pamper themselves during their trip.

Downtown and near the National Mall is the prime choice, especially for first time visitors to Washington D.C.. Here you can walk the whole Mall, but note that it will take quite a while as the Mall is over 2 miles end-to-end. There are also several museums nearby, with exhibits that are sure to fascinate and pique your curiosity. Accommodation in this district include budget, mid-range and expensive hotels.

The North Central district is a place to be if you’re looking for a neighborhood atmosphere with access to great museums, interest galleries, live jazz clubs and high-end nightclubs. There are also several choices when it comes to dining. Finding lodging here is pretty easy given the number of options, and most of them are near metro stops and decent restaurants.

How to get to Washington

Ronald Reagon Washington National Airport is the closest and most convenient airport to Washing D.C., but it serves only domestic flights. The main international gateway is the Washington Dulles International Airport and it’s 26 miles west of D.C. Those driving in can use coastal superhighways I-95 and I-395. I-495 is the Capital Beltway but it’s notorious for having massive congestions.
