Exploring Miami

Located on the Atlantic coast, Miami is the state of Florida’s largest city and the fourth largest city in the country. It is one of the USA’s main centres of finance, commerce, entertainment and fashion as well as being one of its cleanest cities. It has a diverse culture with a growing Latin American community, giving it the nickname the ‘Capital of Latin America’. This is most evident in enclaves such as Little Havana and Little Haiti where Spanish is the language of choice.

The city’s skyline is dotted with 300 skyscrapers, with the Four Seasons Hotel Miami being the tallest at 240 metres. Miami’s Downtown district is where most of these high-rise buildings can be found and where most visitors opt to stay. Still, all areas of the city should be explored, as each has its own appeal. Omni, Miami’s media and entertainment centre, is one of the best places to go shopping, Coconut Grove is home to some of the city’s best eateries, while the Design District is a haven for art lovers.

Sights nearby

Most visitors find themselves staying in Miami’s Downtown district, though there are over 25 neighbourhoods in Miami. Many of these house luxurious hotels, including The Ritz Carlton, Coconut Grove.

The Barnacle Historic State Park
This five-acre park is home to Miami’s oldest house, The Barnacle, which was built in 1891 for Ralph Middleton Munroe. Munroe was the founder of the Coconut Grove area as well as being the founder of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club. Today the grounds are a historical site that offers picnicking, tours and wildlife viewing. The home also hosts concerts throughout the year.

South Beach
Spanning from 23rd street to Pointe Park, this world-renowned beach resort area is known for its nightclubs, art scene and architecture, and is home to numerous famous high-end hotels, including The Setai. Ocean Drive is arguably its most famous strip and plays host to a plethora of phenomenal restaurants and cafés as well as many famous nightclubs. Those that want a break from the beach can wander around the impressive Art Deco District, visit the Bass Museum of Art or shop in the Lincoln Road Mall.

Miami Seaquarium
Located on Virginia Key Island in Biscayne Bay, this 38-acre oceanarium is the oldest of its kind in the USA, dating back to 1955. The 1960s television show Flipper was filmed here and Lolita the famous orca whale has lived here since 1970. The killer whale stars in a show, though there are also sharks, fish, turtles, reptiles and birds living here; together they attract over 500,000 visitors each year.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Miami’s top chefs are the brainchildren of the unique ‘New World’ cuisine, a fusion of Caribbean and Latin American flavours with European techniques and flair. Still, nearly all types of cuisine are available in Miami, from Middle Eastern to American fast-food joints and well-known restaurant chains. Food can be had at any price, with some of the best food being served at the Mandarin Oriental Miami and Hotel Beaux Arts Miami. The city is also home to more shopping venues than one can dream of; these consist of shopping malls, shopping streets and even shopping districts. Everything from designer clothes to home furnishings can found in Miami.

Public transport

All corners of Miami are easily accessible thanks to its extensive public transport network. Buses, trains, metro and people movers traverse the city and even link it directly to Miami International Airport. Miami-Dade Transit operates two metro lines and 93 bus routes throughout the city as well as a commuter rail network that links it to other areas in the metropolitan area. The Downtown district is among the easiest to get around as it has three elevated electric people mover lines that run from the Edgewood neighbourhood to the Financial District.
