Where to stay in Lake Louise

Exploring Lake Louise

The tiny hamlet of Lake Louise lies just five kilometres from glacial Lake Louise in beautiful Banff National Park. The lake is famous for its glowing emerald green waters, and is a luxury destination for visitors looking for supreme natural beauty and outdoor activities. The area is well-known for its winter ski resort as well as for the thrill of ice skating on the frozen lake, and spring and summer are favourite times with hikers, walkers, sailors, and fishing enthusiasts. The highlights here are the stunning Rocky Mountain views and the unspoiled wildernesses surrounding the lake.

The Lake Louise Ski Area hosts alpine and cross country trails, as well as snowboarding and heli-skiing areas, and ice-fishing and skating on the lake are popular pursuits. Most of the hamlet’s 1,000 residents live on the lakeshore in a huddle of homes known as ‘the village’, and there’s another small community adjacent to the famous Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Hotel. Banff National Park is now a World Heritage-listed UNESCO site for its unique flora, fauna, superb natural beauty, and Victoria Glacier. Lake Louise draws visitors year-round, although winter is the most popular time for its top-class skiing, ice-sculpture contests, and traditional activities, such as sleigh rides and dog sledding.

Sightseeing near Lake Louise

- Lake Louise Gondola

Summer visitors to Lake Louise as well as winter skiers are treated to magnificent views of the surrounding terrain on the Lake Louise Gondola. In summer, the ski area is given over to a wildlife viewing centre, with grizzly bears in their natural environment the most popular sightings.

- Victoria Glacier

The hike up to the Victoria Glacier is one of the world’s great trails, beginning at the lakeshore and passing a welcome teahouse before it switchbacks to the edge of the giant river of ice with its mysterious crevasses and ice fields. It’s not the best idea to venture onto the glacier itself, but a close-up view of its massive size and the sound of millions of tons of slowly-moving ice is an unforgettable experience.
