Sightseeing near Paihia Beach

- Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Make sure to visit this important historic site during your visit. It is the grounds of where in 1840 New Zealand's founding document was signed: the Treaty of Waitangi. The Treaty Grounds features the Treaty House, the carved Meeting House and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. Once you get here, you will be able to take guided tours and view cultural performances.

- Haruru Falls

Haruru stands for 'big noise' and once you get here you will realize why. The spectacular waterfalls fall in the shape of a horseshoe, making it a sight worth seeing. This is actually a site rich in history as it was New Zealand’s first river port and an aramoana (sea road or ocean path) for the inland Maori tribes and for the early vision boats. In the 1800s, more than 100 Maori villages lined the banks of the Haruru River which flows down to the sea at Waitangi. You can drive there but there’s an excellent walking track between the Falls and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
