Exploring Hagley Park

Hagley Park, dominating the city center, is the jewel in Christchurch’s verdant crown, with sweeping lawns and avenues lined with oriental plane trees. This large park also features the tranquil Victoria Lake, a loop of the meandering River Avon and a giant gum tree that clamors to be photographed.

Accommodation near Hagley Park

With many city center hotels destroyed in the earthquake, central accommodation in Christchurch has been in high demand over the last few years. There are the usual international brands downtown, but if you fancy something different, head to the seaside suburb of Sumner. Recommended accommodation include the The Towers on the Park , Argyle On The Park and Chateau on The Park .

Sightseeing near Hagley Park

- Victoria Square

Located in central Christchurch, this square was originally known as Market Place or Market Square, because it was the site of market days, fairs, and trade before its redevelopment in 1896–1897 into a park. There are many notable attractions at this site including the Captain James Cook statue as well as the country's oldest cast iron and stone bridge, now known as the Hamish Hay Bridge.

- Canterbury Museum

This historic museum is housed in a Gothic Revival building. It is world-renowned for its natural and human history collections. The Antarctic Gallery is a particular highlight, with an extensive collection of artefacts from the Heroic Era of Antarctic exploration.

Transportation near Hagley Park

Driving in Christchurch is easy, and parking is usually no problem. Hiring a car comes into its own for touring the South Island’s scenic wonders and trips to New Brighton Beach, the weekend hub for most local people due to its regular events, quaint shops and beachside pubs. The city’s bus service is adequate, but occasional gaps in the service make getting around a slow process, especially late at night and on Sundays.
