Where to stay in Vejle

Vejle Hotels

Vejle’s dramatic setting - surrounded by a mesh of rivers, fjords, and sharp, pine-tree coated hills - gives a fantastic first impression, and its deep historical roots help to make this former market town one of Jutland’s most intriguing destinations. If the kids are in tow, you’ll find your itinerary fits together perfectly, as you explore the home of tiny toy bricks, at Legoland, before taking on exhilarating outdoor activities - like kayaking across the stunning fjord’s smooth water.

Things to see

A fluttering white cross on red background welcomes you to the giant stone monuments at Jelling - and the Danish flag that’s proudly displayed here is more significant than you might first realise. The Jelling Runestones mark the spot where modern Denmark was born, as these amazing monuments - created by King Harald Bluetooth – announced the arrival of Christianity in the country. They’re commonly referred to as ‘Denmark’s birth certificate’, and feature the first uses of the word ‘Danmark’. Walk around the UNESCO World Heritage Site for yourself, to learn about these pivotal slabs of Danish history, and to see the pretty whitewash church from 965 AD. Switch your attention from history, to nature and the environment - as you don your white coats for some of Okolariet’s interactive experiments. This charming museum get kids involved in the learning - and they’ll inevitably come away with muddy hands and beaming faces, after spotting hidden animals in the forest, and crawling through secret underground tunnels. Head to Legoland Billund to immerse yourself in the blocky world of Lego. See space shuttles, pieced together brick-by-brick, and entire cities built from the colourful cubes, before riding hair-raising attractions in the town where Lego was invented.

Where to stay

Whether you want to stay in the pretty town itself, close to the stylish crests of Skyttehusbugten Bay’s ultra-modern, wave-shaped apartments - or in the thick forestry to the south of the fjord, Vejle has plenty to offer. You’ll feel like you’re the only ones on the course, as you whip your golf ball between thick banks of trees, during a stay near the peaceful Vejle Golf Club. Or, find a more central hotel, so you can visit Vejle’s oldest resident - the Haraldskær Woman - whose body lies preserved at the Vejle Museum. The shrivelled woman is believed to have died in 490 BC - after being ritually sacrificed - but her body was amazingly preserved by a bog - to the extent that the blackberries of her final meal were still identifiable in her stomach.
