Exploring Amsterdam

The more than 1,500 canals and bridges situated throughout Amsterdam have earned the Netherlands national capital its 'Venice of the North' nickname. Over one million people live in Amsterdam and its surrounding area, but the city's relatively compact Old Centre contains a large number of its main attractions. Whether visitors want to explore Amsterdam's infamous torture, sex, and marijuana museums or stick to more sedate attractions such as the floating market or the regal Royal Palace, this tolerant city has something for everyone. Those wishing to sample Amsterdam's nightlife scene will find the liveliest parties in the Canal Ring's Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein zones, while neighbouring Plantage contains the city's most tranquil green spaces.

Amsterdam's five-star hotels are ranked among Europe's most expensive and advance booking is essential on holidays and weekends. Those willing to spare no expense for the most luxurious of Amsterdam's over 400 different hotels may enjoy the centrally located Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel near Dam Square or the stately De L'Europe Amsterdam along the Amstel River. Many of the world's most renowned luxury hotel chains are also represented in Amsterdam.

Sights nearby

Walking from Amsterdam's main rail station to most of the city center's main attractions typically takes no more than 30 minutes. Cycling is an even faster way to navigate this city, especially as most significant streets are equipped with designated bicycle lanes.

Royal Palace This stately building may no longer be used as an official palace, but is still worth a closer look for its outstanding architecture and history. This structure was first constructed as a mid-17th century town hall before Napoleon Bonaparte's younger brother converted it into a palace after his 1808 coronation as king of the Netherlands. The Burgerzal remains one of Europe's finest ceremonial halls.

Westerkerk One of the world's most famous Dutch artists, Rembrandt, is supposedly buried within Amsterdam's 'west church.' In 1966, Queen Beatrix was married in this magnificent 17th century Renaissance church, whose tower rises 85m above some of the most outstanding Amsterdam skyline views.

Amsterdamse Bos The 400 cherry trees which blossom in this sprawling wood's Kersenbloesempark each spring rival many of those found in Japan. However, many more trees and plants from across the world flourish in this relaxing green space where so many locals swim, sail, jog, fish, stroll, or simply relax. Further details about how this wood was created are found within the fascinating Bosmuseum.

Heinekenbrouwerij The original Heineken brewery halted its over two centuries of constant large scale beer production here in 1988. However, fans of the best known Dutch beer can still enjoy a fascinating 75-minute tour, complete with free samples offered by the Brewhouse Bar.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

The 'brown cafés' whose visitors can legally partake of soft drugs such as marijuana may be Amsterdam's most infamous eating establishments. However, the city also contains over 1,000 more restaurants, a large number of which serve Asian cuisine. The five-star Hotel Okura Amsterdam serves some of Amsterdam's finest Japanese fare by the city's Japanese gardens. Many more local restaurants specialise in foods native to former Dutch colonies like Indonesia and Suriname. The best places to find delicious late night eats, however, are the local pubs called eetcafés. Amsterdam is also a shopping paradise where Bijenkorf and Magna Plaza are just two of the many fine department stores found along the Nieuwedijk, Rokin, Damrak, Leidsestraat, and Kalverstraat streets. Speigelstraat contains many of the city's most outstanding antique shops.

Public transport

In this city with endless good quality public transit options, taxis and automobiles are perhaps the least convenient means of transportation. Visitors can board any of Amsterdam's four metro lines, night buses, and trams with a recently implemented contactless card called OV-chipkaart. The disposable OV-chipkaart cards are most useful for temporary visitors as they can choose between cards valid from one to 168 hours. Ferries and rented electric boats capable of transporting up to six people are the easiest ways to navigate Amsterdam's endless canals. However, the most unusual way to travel across the city may be its surprisingly large number of tuk-tuks, a means of transportation far more commonly found in Southeast Asia.
