Exploring Auckland

Situated between the sea and beautiful hilly countryside, Auckland is the largest and the most populous city in New Zealand, as well as the country’s most visited destination. The city has a lot of cultural diversity, with European expatriates, Asians, Pacific islanders, and indigenous Maori living together in harmony. As a result, Auckland is filled with a variety of international flavours and plays host to numerous cultural festivals. Shopaholics will not be bored here as its fashion centre is home to both local and international brands. Still, the city is most noted for its harbour, which is strewn with hundreds of yachts, giving Auckland its nickname: the ‘City of Sails’.

There is no shortage of things to see and do in Auckland, which is home to famous sights such as the iconic Harbour Bridge and the 328-metre tall Sky Tower. The 75-hectare Auckland Domain is one of the city’s most visited attractions and offers stunning views of the city and its port, while Auckland Art Gallery offers art lovers a chance to glance at New Zealand’s largest collection of both national and international art.

Sights nearby

Auckland’s stunning surroundings offer visitors many opportunities for daytrips, while those not wishing to venture out of the city will find many locations at which to keep themselves busy. Auckland is home to a great selection of luxury hotels that make it an extremely comfortable base.

- Mount Eden

The highest point in the city is known to the Maoris as Maungawhau, which means the ‘Mountain of the Whau Tree’. The mountain offers visitors stunning 360-degree views of the city, with its peak accessible on foot or by car. The best way to explore the hill is by going on a guided heritage walk, though it can easily be explored independently. The grassy 50-metre deep crater is the main draw of Mount Eden, though it is also home to a charming village that is perfect for shopping or enjoying a meal while taking in the picturesque views.

- Waiheke Island

Just a 35-minute ferry ride away from Auckland, Waiheke Island is one of the most popular places for daytrips in the hot summer months of January and February. It is home to some of the area’s best beaches and the luxurious Delamore Lodge, which is near the stunning Oneroa Beach. The island is famous for its fantastic wine, with Syrah being the best wine produced here. There are 14 vineyards on the island that can be visited on a wine tasting tour or individually explored, with the most famous vineyards Destiny Bay Vineyards, Goldwater Estate, Mudbrick Vineyard, and Obsidian Vineyard.

- Viaduct Basin

This former commercial harbour is now one of Auckland’s most upscale neighbourhoods and where some of the city’s most high-end hotels can be found, including the Hilton Auckland and the Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour. In the harbour itself are numerous colourful yachts, many of which can be chartered for a day to sail around Freeman’s Bay and Stanley Bay or to nearby islands. Adjacent to the neighbourhood are the historical Tepid Baths and the lovely Victoria Park, which combined make for a great day out.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Food from all corners of the world can be enjoyed in Auckland, including cuisine from Vietnam, Japan, Mexico and Italy. Many of Auckland’s best eateries are located in the Viaduct Basin as well as in the Skycity Grand Hotel next to the iconic Sky Tower and the Skycity entertainment complex. Here, visitors will find a plethora of bars and a casino, while fashionistas will find the most high-end shops along nearby High Street and Vulcan Lane.

Public transport

There are a variety of transportation options for getting around Auckland though public buses are the most convenient and the most popular way to get around. Buses usually run every 15 minutes or less and reach nearly all popular destinations throughout the city. Most visitors find the Link Bus and the City Circuit bus the most convenient options though nearly all buses run to and from the Central Business District.
