Bongpyeong Traditional Market is a famous marketplace with its origin dating back some 400 years to the Joseon Dynasty. During the days when there were peddlers (jangdolbaenggi) who carried goods on their back and went to one market to another, it attracted customers even from Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do. Of course, after industrialisation, the market suffered from demand and decreasing sales like other traditional markets, but with the support of a traditional market revitalisation project, the market was transformed into a shopping area with various things to see and enjoy.

Bongpyeong Traditional Market boasts a large size, and when the local fifth-day market is opened, you can find almost anything you need here. All kinds of products such as clothes, fruits, side dishes, agricultural products, processed foods, and other local food are sold. There are stores and stalls that sell medicinal herbs picked in the Pyeongchang area. While shopping, you can taste various local foods made with buckwheat, a speciality of Pyeongchang, such as pan-fried buckwheat cakes (bukkumi), buckwheat crepes (jeonbyeong), and buckwheat pancakes (buchim), along with representative street foods of Korea. These foods can be enjoyed by people of all ages, so don't forget to try them with your family.
