Old old and old
A very old hotel cosmetically , some areas lacked cleanliness. but the rooms were neat , with bed linen being exceptional clean ,and at the end of the day that's all one wanted . We did have a problem the first night whereas the person directly above our room flooded the bathroom which then poured through the ceiling flooded our bathroom , maintainence were very quick to come clean up ,only to have the same guest do the same thing again early the following morning !!! It was decided that we should be relocated and the hotel upgraded us for the inconvenience. Again the suite was ok being the hotel is old , and it was nice they gave us the upgrade. however the kitchen faucets did not work and there was mold in the sink where previously some one had thrown food into the sink. The elevator was another thing that they were having problems with, some days it was not working and one had to use the service elevator !! One does not want to sound so negative about the hotel , as we spent so little time in there other than sleep, but its basically a very old building which could do with a fresh coat of paint and some up grades

Best value in the city
Overall, this is hands down the best value in Manhattan for a hotel. The location is perfect- the Salisbury is centered in Midtown, a few blocks south of Central Park and within a few blocks to many different subway lines. The hotel is roomy- I've stayed here twice, both for conferences, and found the rooms to be spacious. The first time I stayed was with a colleague in November 2015 in a regular double, with fridge and microwave. I also stayed here last week with three other colleagues in a suite with two double beds and a couch. The suite had a small kitchenette area, with a microwave, fridge, sink, and table and chairs, and we were all very comfortable. The hotel is clean- While the furnishings and decor are older and dated, it did not affect the cleanliness of the room. The staff is accommodating- Any request we had was met. The price is right- Look up rates for hotels in the area, and there is a huge difference in rates. For those on a budget, this is a clear choice. I had to drive into the city, thus necessitating overnight parking, but it was only $25 a night. I've stayed in 8 different hotels in Manhattan. While the Salisbury is not the most posh, it is clearly the best value. I highly recommend the hotel if you are a budget traveler who likes comfortable, clean, and cheap accommodations in a great location.

From the reviews I read of this hotel before I stayed here, I honestly thought that my trip would be bad. It wasn't. The staff were very nice and helpful, the room I stayed in was far bigger than I thought and was very clean when I arrived, apart from the bathroom smelt a bit mildewy. Yes the hotel needs a makeover but the decor didn’t detract from the fact this was a nice place to stay. One thing I would point out is that the a/c was very loud and you couldn’t sleep with it on and if you are considering buying the WiFi they have there DON’T, it is the worst WiFi service i have ever used and it is a massive rip off. The thing couldn’t even load google in under a couple of minutes and if you want to watch a video then you have a good hour or so wait on your hands. However this hotel was very comfortable, I didn’t sleep badly here. The staff were delightful and happy to offer advice about nearby amenities. The hotel needs a makeover but the rooms are still very nice and the place is in a nice location in NYC, close to Central Park and about a 10 minute walk from the Rock and Times Square, which was good because I had tickets to see the lion king. I would recommend this hotel to people who aren’t expecting the Ritz and I would definitely stay here again.

Good start-rude finish.
The gentleman at the front door were wonderful. Friendly, engaging, pleasant. Very helpful. Check in was OK although the person checking us in didn't look at me once. We were told parking was $24 overnight until we left the next day. We didn't realize it was just 24 hrs and that was not communicated to us. We went to pick up our car 24 hrs and 53 mins after and we're being charged double the price. When I asked to speak to a Mgr, she would only talk to me on the phone-never came down and spoke to me in person. She was abrupt, lacked empathy, placed blame on me, and said it's not fair the hotel would have to pay for it (while it may have been my responsibility to ask exact timeframes of the garage even if they told me I could explore the city on our 2md day-Hospitality 101 does not encourage you to make your guests feel badly.) She said she would call the lobby phone back. She never did. Instead some other guy was directed to get me some petty cash (great! They were making it right!) But since he was busy another person got the money. He scowled at me and asked "so what was the problem?" And I said we were 53 mins late to get our car. He then started to berate me and asked "And you weren't concerned about going over?" The situation was being resolved-He did not need to continue to make me feel badly for the misinformation I received from the hotel. This whole event left a bad taste in my mouth. Seems like the manager and front desk employees could use some training.

The picture depicted online was not what our room looked like. It was a huge suite, much larger than I anticipated. There were many closets also. But the room had broken lamps, old musty smelling carpet and drapes. Our allergies instantly acted up. Though it was a non smoking room, it had a smoky smell as we walked in. The beds had clean sheets and duvet covers and the mattresses were comfortable. But the bathroom, which I could tell had attempted to be cleaned (due to the mop strings left on the floor), was dirty. I had to wash the tub which had hair and dirt in it, before we could use it. The toilet would not flush without lifting the lid of the tank and pulling the plug up manually. We didn't stay but one night (we arrived very late and there was no time to find a new place at that point.) In the morning, we checked out and the hotel staff was very pleasant in refunding our remaining days of the stay and we moved to another hotel. Again, all staff we encountered was very pleasant and accommodating. There are probably rooms that look like the one in the picture listed, but ours was nothing like that room, and we weren't willing to wait and see if they could find us another room.
