Nice hotel close to the old town
Hotel entrance/reception was welcoming. Location close and walking distance to the old town and main train station Rooms were of a good size (twin). 5th floor. Facing the front of the hotel. Beds were comfortable. Air con was good. Bathroom & amenities in the room were good. Had slippers, but no robes or complimentary water in standard room though. Had to buy from the minibar or the shop on the corner. Breakfast was great, with a lot of selection of hot & cold foods. Only downside I would say is the wifi not working/intermittent in the room and only one lift available, which could mean a wait at busy times, but other than that a pleasant stay with no issues.

Exceptional 10.0
Great location, great hotel!
Stayed for a 3 night break from 30 November with friends. We had 3 business class rooms. All were clean, comfortable & in good condition. My room was on the 5th floor, at the back of the property - it was nice & quiet but had no view. My friends had rooms on the 2nd & 3rd floors at the front of the property & they were a little noisy - the trams in particular I think! The bed was kingsize, very comfortable & the bathroom was spacious. Mine was a shower room only - but others have baths with showers over - so make sure you get what you want. There was plenty of storage, a safe & the wifi was quick with good coverage. The room was a little hot & I couldn't work out the air-conditioning - but the windows opened so it wasn't a problem. The public areas of the hotel are very nice - the hotel feels cosy. Breakfast was good with a varied choice. The only minor criticism would be that things ran out quickly & weren't replenished as often as you'd like. But having said that there is a board that explains that if you go to breakfast at certain times it is likely to be busy! The location is really good. A 5 minute walk to the old town & the market (amazing!) & 20 mins to the Art Deco area. There are loads of really good bars and restaurants within 10 mins walk. All the staff were very friendly & helpful, especially Karina on front of house who always had a smile & said "Hi". All in all a great hotel in a great city!

Don't book a Classic / Standard Room
According to Expedia this is a Top Property - 4 star - and the pictures look great, but it just isn't like this at all. Check in - possibly Latvia's most hostile receptionist? I asked if parking was available - "no - full" was the response. I asked about secure alternatives? "use the street" wasn't very helpful. (By the way our car was broken into on the last night so this perhaps isn't a Hotel in the nicest part of the Old town?) The room we were shown to was in no way 4*, MORE LIKE 1*, the least attractive room in a 4* I have ever seen. Dirty walls, a ridiculously soft bed with no support, bare walls apart from a mirror, furniture that looked like it was from a charity shop, open the window - the view was of a flat roof, derelict buildings and pipework, and the previous occupant had left their socks on the windowsill. NICE. The room was nothing like that as shown on their website. Nothing - not one bit. So we complained and asked for a different room - "none available - fully booked" came from Miss Helpful Latvia 2017. We were happy to pay for an upgrade but again told nothing was available. So I went on line and found that rooms WERE available - so showed this on our iPad to reception and we got an upgrade to a new room for 10 euros. Only available for 1 night apparently! So we then questioned the senior manager on site who told us this... THE PICTURES OF THE CLASSIC ROOMS ARE FROM THEIR SISTER HOTEL - NOT THE METROPOLE. Truly unbelievable.

In Close Proximity to Most Sites
It is easy to take the airport bus to the hotel. The #22 bus or #222 mini-bus are located across a small parking lot, and stop relatively close to the hotel. A ticket on board is €2 – purchased beforehand costs €1.20. Once the bus goes over the Daugava River, the hotel’s stop will be the second one called Autoosta. The stops are clearly listed on user-friendly screens inside the bus. The hotel is about a 10-minute walk (taking the underground pedestrian walkway). The concierge employees were consistently helpful, professional, and thoroughly pleasant. My room, #220, was next to the lift, faced the rear, and was quiet. It was unusual to see that room doors open outward into the corridor – so it would be wise to open the door carefully to avoid hitting an unsuspecting passerby! The room was sizable, had a coffee maker, safe, individually controlled air-conditioning, and a bed with a firm mattress. The spotless bathroom had a bathtub and dual-purpose shower heads: rain or handheld (not all rooms have the same fixtures). There was a useful shaving mirror and lighting was adequate. The soap bar was unusually small: the hotel should have provided at least two. The towel rack was heated which was especially useful for drying both towels and clothes. A free gym pass is available. This hotel is in close proximity to major sites such as Old Town, the Art Noveau District, Central Market, and Central Station. I would certainly return to Semarah Hotel Metropole.

Poor 2.0
Not a pleasant stay.
When I and my parents tried to do check-in, one of the staff told me that "there is overbooking so we are not able to stay at the room we booked at the first night". Because of that, the staff offered vouchers so that we could have meal at their restaurant. And then she said that we could stay at the room we have booked at the second night. Since my parents are old I didn't want them to move their luggage so I asked about this and she said if we pack the luggage and leave them in our room they will move them to the new rooms. After staying one night, we walked around the town and got back to the hotel, expecting the new rooms were ready. However, one of the staff (different staff from the day before) told us there was no room to move so we had to stay at the same room. She knew that I had received the vouchers but didn't know that there would be room change. After I told her about the story, her face looked like I was trying to get something more from the hotel. Anyway she offered another voucher but I refused it since we needed better bedrooms, not free meals (the beds in standard single/double room are not good-sagging mattress). If anyone encounters a similar situation as mine, you have to ask written note or document from the staff that guarantees your room.
