Great location, terrible staff and facilities
Riviera is a landmark on the Beyrouth seafront, and an institution to which Lebanese remained attached throughout good and bad times. The facilities are aged and dumpy despite a post war makeover with paint cracking everywhere, a broken TV frame (room 307), very negligent hygiene (balcony was outright dirty and the mattress had repulsive unremived stains). But despite all this, one could forget about any inconvenience given the unrivaled sea views and the location that cannot be bested, had it not been for the worst hotel staff that we have ever encountered. Outright incompetence, lack of managerial experience and issues remaining unresolved. The housekeeping staff is verging on insolence and the valet team is literally running a shop within a shop. Our driver could not pull over to pick us up as he was immediately asked to remove the car which created scenes of chaos and continuous stress for us. When asked to speak to the hotel manager I was answered that there was no manager on site. The pool staff asks hotel guests for extra charges for the use of some sun beds, a practice unheard of anywhere else, which could have been ok had the said personnel showed any courtesy as opposed to outright vulgarity and a lack of command of any covers animal skills in either English or French, or any other non Arabic Idioms. Some of the best offs from our stay, in no order: inside the lobby smokers, repair teams conducting heavy repairs on adjacent wall at 9 am with no notice,...

Disappointing service and state of hotel and rooms
The hotel is very centrally located and is directly on the promenade by the sea. It has access to the pool area just by the ocean, which is it's only attractive quality. However, the beach club has separate management and so you are asked to pay for towels and for specific sun loungers. The service at the pool is incredibly poor and food and drinks bad quality and overpriced. The staff in the hotel were disappointingly unhelpful and unresponsive. Our room was small but fine, however, our air conditioning was severely leaking the entire stay, which was unsafe as there were lights on the ceiling by the leak and the floor was constantly a pool of water. Despite constantly asking reception this was never fixed. The phone in the room was also constantly not working, which meant having to go down to reception. During our stay the door to the balcony also did not open due to the lock being broken, this was only fixed on the last day of our 6 night stay. We were never offered another room or any sort of compensation for all these issues. I would only choose this hotel if you want to spend the entire time partying by the pool, otherwise there are many much better options in Beirut. This hotel if would rate as a three star property at best.

    Exceptional 10.0
    Good experience with management
Yes, it had all of those things in abundance location, ambience, and a whiff of Cold War ambience, which for me generates excitement and anticipation. But for me one thing stood out in particular. ‘Friendship in need’ is an old adage. We experienced it in reality in this hotel. We had just come from Athens, where Metro criminals relieved me of cash and all my credit cards which must have been a very sophisticated operation. I am widely traveled and not a naive person. My wife also lost money. But she had one Visa card. Friends from ( Ireland ) sent money post haste. It takes 24 hours to become activated. In this hotel (jamil) the Manager advanced us sufficient credit to survive in the interim period. Top marks to the Manager and the Riviera Hotel

    Very good 8.0
Ocean view and a great location
Despite the minor mix up when we checked in, and having to wait for the room to be cleaned, the fruit basket, the service level of the staff and the view from our balcony made up for it. So did the pool area, where we spent every morning luxuriating in the sun and cooling down in the saltwater pool. I had never tried a saltwater pool before, and it took a little getting used to, but it didn't smell of clorine and it left my skin soft and ready for the sun. The location of the hotel was great. Very central, and a good starting out point for the many walks we took. Not too far from interesting cultural explorations and right by the water. I would definitely recommend this place to others, and would love to come back for another visit.

i seriously expected from more this hotel. the cleaning this staff did not clean how they should have. i left food stain on my bed the night before and when i come back the next day my bed was made with the same bed sheets that had ketchup stains on them. my bathroom wasn't clean and money was missing from my room. the food was horrible and over priced for nothing. the staff was rude and unhelpful. they had no beech but two pools. walked into my room before with housekeeping looking through my things while my do not disturb sign was out. and my "city view" was the alley in the back. never again.
