An old country house hotel in a beautiful setting.

Disappointed
Disappointed with overall stay at Ardoe. The room was clean and comfortable however, our room service phone was not working, we informed hotel and ordered room service at reception which my partner was then made to carry back to room himself. The cocktails were disappointing, certainly not worth the £9 paid each. Our evening meal again was not worth the money. The steak that I had was dry and VERY fatty, and the cheesecake for pudding was tasteless and crumbly. My partner ordered a side of macaroni cheese which looked/tasted like it had come from a supermarket tin poured into a bowl. Breakfast was good, however there was no tomato ketchup, and in a hotel so large and serving full Scottish breakfast seems like it’s a small thing that could easily be sorted. The waitresses were the same girls from the night before who I felt dreadfully sorry for as it was a full restaurant and only the two of them. As much as they were rushed, they were very pleasant girls. We had been highly recommended Ardoe by family members and were very disappointed with our stay. When they visited they did inform us that it was privately owned and not owned by Mercure, I certainly wouldn’t class it as 4* and you can definitely feel that it is now a chain run hotel.

Good 6.0
My wife and I stayed here 4 years ago and it was marvellous. We raved about it to our now teenage kids over those years. We booked a 2 night weekend stay for 9th and 10th October to celebrate daughter’s birthday. Due to Covid did expect it to be quieter than previously which it certainly was. Disappointed though by overall cleanliness of public areas and rundown appearance. Had issues with staff over a ‘bending’ of latest covid rules where some diners had alcohol despite being after 6pm curfew and indoors. Wife ordered soda and lime but got a flat one delivered by waiter

Nice staying here - staff polite, room clean, and comfortable. Enjoyable breakfast. All covid restrictions being well adhered to so safe to visit.

Good Value and comfort
Lovely hotel that was a bit too quiet and effected by Covid restrictions particularly that the room was not cleaned over the 3 nights we were there.

One night stay at Ardoe
Hotel was well organised with hand sanitisers and social distancing measures had been well implemented. We were impressed by this element of our stay. Room was fine, bed comfortable and facilities good. Had dinner in the evening at 8pm. We received our meal at 915pm which was a little slow in service. Breakfast was ok, it wasn’t particularly hot and we had to ask for our toast which didn’t come until after we had finished. I think it had been forgotten about. This is not a critical review but observations which in themselves are minor and during this challenging time may not be unexpected. However, they may play a part when it comes to making a return visit to this hotel. Thank you

Little gem!
A stunning castle mansion house located in extensive grounds. The interior has been sympathetically renovated with its original features still prominent. The rooms are spacious, well decorated and in excellent condition. The king size bed was incredibly comfortable and the bathroom gave a modern luxe feel with the tile tone and high end chrome fittings. Various restaurant and bar options, Lairds and Soapies is a lovely relaxing area and the Whisky bar offers a refined place to enjoy a malt. A favoured venue for a wedding too! Outdoor seating on the terrace is a welcome bonus to enjoy the sun. The staff are so friendly and helpful.

Perfect one night stay.
Perfect one night stay before meeting the Shetland ferry in the morning. Just outside the Covid lockdown area and still just 10 minutes from the ferry terminal. Very helpful staff, great spot for the dog too.

Disappointing
Doesn’t feel like a five star hotel very dated with no atmosphere and rooms very stuffy with no air conditioning. Refreshments and toiletries severely lacking and the breakfast is disgusting. Just a speed oven job. I’ve had better in a Tesco’s cafe
