6/10 Good

Good location and staff, but lots of other issues
Let me start by saying the location and staff were 2 high points of this hotel. Loved being in the center of Monterey, with great restaurants, bars, and shopping nearby.
The staff was great. We valet'ed our rental car, and once we'd call to have the car brought up, it took less than 5 minutes.
A few negatives:
1. We were on the "old" side of the hotel, which they call historic. The rooms are old - small, with tiny TVs from the 80s, no closet (they have a HUGE armoire that takes up most of the room instead), gross bathrooms, and old (I suppose antique) furniture. When walking to the elevator one day, we saw inside a room on the "newer" side of the hotel, and I wish we would have stayed there.
2. Like other reviews mention, the street noise is a problem. It's obviously an older hotel with old windows. We were on the 3rd floor and could hear quiet conversations from people walking down the street. (One night, there was a fight at 2am between people leaving the bar and some homeless people camping outside the Walgreens. It was so loud and scary, and kept us up most of the night. In hindsight, we probably should have called the cops.) Again, we overall liked the location, so we tried not to let the street noise bother us.
3. The mattresses are old - and squeaky. The walls (and floors) are thin. We were in room 306, and we could only assume that the people above us in room 406 were on their honeymoon... if you know what I mean. Very uncomfortable to hear it that clearly (ew)
