The concierge people do not care about customer service This is the last service I asked of concierge which turned out to be the worst of all !!! I had to go to airport at midnight so I asked the concierge to call me taxi. After I got in taxi, I immediately smelled heavy smoke air. Then I noticed there’s no meter. When I asked how much, the driver said CNY 180 !! I said why so much when I only paid CNY 90 from Beijing to airport with some traffic jam and this is midnight so no traffic. Driver excuse was midnight rate is different until 5am. I am a single female and had quite a few heavy luggages with me and it’s midnight so the road is empty. Considering safety, I didn’t argue with him or asked him to stop in the middle of the road. Afterward I called hotel to complaint as I feel like being scammed. And they confirmed it is the case but they put the blame on me for not stepping out after knowing no meter on. I trusted hotel people to know good company !! That’s why I asked them to call taxi for me. Who is it to say if the concierge wasn’t involved with the scammer? I can’t believe they take no responsibility for this. I am a tourist who has no choice but to rely on local expert in this case !! Every time I dealt with concierge, it’s different person and all of them have no customer service skills. One walked away in the middle of our talk to reply to front desk without excusing himself. One didn’t call me back when I asked him to.

Good Location. Close to iconic sites
This hotel is quite grandiose in its late 90's (?) style. It is comfortable and clean with a/c that maybe works overly well. It is located within 15 minutes walk of the Forbidden City and Tianammen Square. There are also a number of old Beijing streets nearby. And a good variety of dining options - dozens of Chinese, plus other Asian choices and a very good Italian Pizzeria/cafe in the nearby APM Shopping Centre. The local subway station is about 5 minutes away, and the subway is very fast, modern, safe and easy to use. All station stops are clearly marked in English on display panels inside the train and bilingual announcements made as well. The subway is a great way to cross this enormous city without wasting huge amounts of time (and cash) in traffic jams. Tour operators pick up/drop off at the "Peace". Be aware of tours that take you (unannounced until the tour starts) to shopping stops at jade factories, tea ceremonies, Chinese foot massages and pearl shops etc which waste time, pry money and can be an annoying distraction from what you want in a tour. It's also worth finding out how much service operators provide at destinations - after getting our group on the chair lift to The Wall our tour guide left us to our own devises for an hour or so (with a bustling crowd of tens of thousands of locals) and gave us no on the spot insights as to the wall itself. There were information boards to read however, if we could get close enough.

Old wing way overdue for reconditioning
The pleasant Novotel staff in the main lobby saved from a worse review. The tower wing of hotel may be better but the older lower level wing is WAY below what I would expect of a Novotel: 1) A separate elevator is required to go to mezzanine floor of old wing -- then there is no option other than to carry luggage up 1/2 floor flight of stairs to where elevators for level 2 to 6 are located. 2) Room had stale odor with an attempt to cover with fragrance sticks 3) Wallpaper was peeling 4) Carpet was worn and stained 5) Thermostat did not appear to work (fortunately weather was accommodating for the few hours I spent in the room sleeping) 6) Mold was evident between desk top and glass covering. 7) Hotel literature was worn and warped from moisture. Bedsheets and bathroom were acceptable otherwise (time permitting in my tight business schedule) I would have asked for hopefully a better room in main tower. I would hope that Novotel is already well aware of the poor condition of this part of the property. I do not think the rate charged was a good value versus other hotel options in the area. I hope this wing of the hotel is not set aside for "Expedia rooms."

Hotel is good but some staff not very friendly. The lady who books trips does not smile at all and is a bit abrupt. Swimming pool area needs a good clean. Changing rooms, showers and foot bath to pool were disgusting. Water in swimming pool was cloudy and not very clean.

Great Beijing location and very helpful staff
We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Novotel Beijing Peace. Our check in was very late (or should I say early!!) due to a late night flight that was delayed. We were supposed to land in Beijing at 1:00am, but instead we finally arrived at the hotel at about 4:30am! We emailed the hotel prior to the flight and they assured us that this wouldn't be a problem. It certainly wasn't! The staff at the check in desk were great, quickly checking us in, upgrading us and giving us discount vouchers for drinks and breakfast. We were in our room in no time at all! The location of the hotel is great. It is in easy walking distance to food, shopping and tourist areas. We walked to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. The concierge also helped us to book tickets for the Forbidden City, as well as many other helpful tips. Breakfast and the bar area were great. And there were lots of places close by for other meals. On check out, we were able to leave our luggage and the staff also allowed us to use the shower facilities in the gym later that day, as we'd had a day of walking around the city and flew on a late night flight. They booked a taxi for us and made our last day in China a great one!
