Profile: Back Bay

Profile: Back Bay

Back Bay is one of Boston’s most fashionable neighborhoods, enjoying a breathtaking setting on the south bank of the Charles River, just southwest of the city center. This listed Historic District contains some of the best examples of 19th-century urban architecture in the US, notably its charming rows of desirable brownstone homes.

The history of Boston Public Library stretches back to 1848, although the present building in Copley Square dates from 1888. Its holdings include priceless medieval manuscripts, early editions of Shakespeare, a major collection of Daniel Defoe, and the archives of the Handel and Haydn Society.

The manager was super helpful and accommodating. I loved having coffee in the lobby. I was disappointed that the validation for the parking did not work and I was overcharged $10

    Best desk staff ever

Janelle was manning the desk when we arrived about 20 minutes before check in and she personally made sure our room was ready and got us access right a way. Later on I asked for a late check out and was told our room was booked so the hotel needed us out by noon. When I mentioned that we were not catching our train home until 3:30 once again Janelle came through and got us a 1:30 check out which after leaving our bags gave us enough time to have lunch before heading for our train. I have never been treated so graciously by desk staff in any other hotel. Look forward to staying again

Convenient way to experience the best of Boston

Small room, small closet, but very clean and comfortable. I had a room without a street view, so very quiet. Stone tiled shower (no tub) was nice. Front desk staff was friendly. Great location. Close to shopping, sightseeing, and great food. I enjoy walking and was able to walk to Fenway, Boston Common / Freedom Trail, and of course the Public Library (across the street) easily. I felt safe in the neighborhood despite the fact that a shooting (no casualties) happened a couple blocks away while I was there! I would definitely stay here again.

    Nice Boutique Hotel in Boston

a real nice boutique-type hotel in the center of Boston. You can walk easily in Boston and it was located in a nice area. It was clean, the staff was helpful, and it was very reasonably priced.

  • 8.0.Very good

It think that it's a bit unfair to judge this hotel from my stay. Boston is still transitioning out of lock down and the hotel's kitchen and bar were still closed and so I didn't get to see what the place was like under regular conditions. What I can say is that the location couldn't be much better. Directly across the street from Copley Square station, you can catch a subway or a bus or make connections to anywhere by stepping out the door. While the rooms are small, I personally didn't mind, since the room was where I was sleeping, otherwise I was out visiting places that are now open or friends I haven't been able to see. The bed was quite comfortable and the pillows are insanely good. Seriously, I asked where they got their pillow. Bad news, a hotel supply wholesaler. The front desk was friendly and got me checked in and checked out with no hassles. If you are looking for a clean, quiet, boutique style hotel with small rooms and pleasant modern facilities, this could well be the place for you. If you are looking for 4 star luxury treatment, go elsewhere. I had a perfectly pleasant week and would stay at the Charlesmark again, hopefully when it has fully reopened and I can sample what their new kitchen and bar are like.
