Okay hotel, check out policy is rubbish.
I paid a reasonable amount to stay one night in this hotel. The room wasn't as good the one pictured but was fine. What I was appalled by was their check out policy. If you are any where up to one hour late in check out it is $15 charge, one further hour is more and a further hour is more. I was checking out on a Sunday and was going to ask for a late stay as we were staying in the city and going out for lunch with family and it was a cold and miserable day. I was really shocked to find what every other hotel provides as a gift to patrons where the room is available for late check out is a money making venture for this hotel. To make matters worse they had a make shift reception on level 2 that was hard to get to with one tiny lift and a lot of guests using it because of renovations down stairs. I asked the reception where I could safely lock up my bike and they suggested in my room as they had no where else. I took the bike to my room and then when we were trying to check out the next day spent about 15 mins trying to get the lift to our floor with enough room to get the bike in and get to reception and so I had to pay a late check out fee. There are too many hotels in Melbourne to put up with that crap!

What happened to the Mantra brand?
- Fantastic location in the heart of Melbourne - But no driveway/parking/area for cars to pick up/drop off guests/passengers - Beautiful heritage building that has been renovated(?) and maintained fairly well - But some small things needed more attention: * No staff appeared to have noticed a cracked and loose bathroom floor tile * Safe was not in a usable place or apparent condition * No insulation/sound-proofing so a lot of outside noise - Our loft style room was generously spacious - On checking in, we found wood chips/shavings on the 'coffee table', and these were not cleared by housekeeping the next day - Wi-Fi was included in our booking, but no access code was given until we asked - Check-out time is unusually early, and hotel was inflexible with our late check-out request * Lucrative, understandable, and not without precedent, but still out of step with broader international hotel industry practice * Also curious how it was a "full house" when early check-in wanted to be denied (we lucked out when the staff member saw in the system that our room was ready) but "occupancy's pretty low" two days later when late check-out wanted to be denied and the hotel wanted to suggest we pay for an extra night - Finally, on coming to collect our luggage before leaving for the airport, the staff was on phone and it took 9 minutes just to be acknowledged * Fine to serve others well, but a nod/won't-be-long is appropriate - No bathroom in the lobby

Central, initial disappointing but redeemed
Urban basement apartment was down fire escape stairs away from main part of hotel. We struggled with our luggage down the stairs and the fire escape door opens onto a tiny landing whilst balancing your case. On opening fire escape door, the heat hits you as this part is not air conditioned and air conditioner not working properly in room. Dark, no natural light and smells on balcony so couldn't keep door open. Reception advised full for,the night but would move us next day when first available room is cleaned and would move our luggage. Handed in keys and luggage at 10.00 am, reception checked phone number and said would ring as soon as first room cleaned and would move luggage. Returned 5 hours later with no call from hotel. Same receptionist said she did not say she would ring but send a text, she did not say this and no text was received. Our luggage was also still sitting at reception. New room was fine, just as we had expected as we had stayed here before and enjoyed it.

Nice Hotel BAD parking arrangements
The hotel was nice apart from reception in a dingy 2nd story room. (no apology made). Parking was available according to Wotif at a surcharge only to find out when i was in front of the hotel this was not the case and the had an arrangement back down the road (one way street) took me a good 40min to find the parking and park, it was 1 block away from the hotel too. The next morning even though i was told the car park opened at 6am, when i got there there at 7.30 was no one to help and since i stayed at hotel i must see the person 40 min later i got out and missed the appointment i flew to Melbourne for! The hotel should have pre paid parking or a better service. not good enough from the parking OR hotel. will never stay there again.

Great Staff and location. Hotel very disappointing
Great location and lovely staff. Thats about it I'm afraid. The bed and pillows were very comfortable, and had a nice little kitchen area. I had a single level room on floor 1, and the stairs from next door are directly above the bed- so can hear when people walk up and down their stairs. The room next door seems to be the "party" room, or so it felt. The first night there were a group of young men, the second was a group of girls. Each night I could hear pretty much each and every word, and of coarse when their volume was raised by yelling or laughter, well it was as if they were sitting right in front of me. I was in Melbourne for a conference, and absolutely shattered each evening, yet was lucky to have gotten 4 hours sleep each night. The rooms here are paper thin to the point of being ridiculous, well mine was anyway.
