We are regular guests at the luxurious Royale Chulan in Penang, so were shocked by its slovenly twin in KL. The bathroom sink leaked, leaving a puddle of water on the floor. The shower also fell directly on the floor, so it was always necessary to wade through the bathroom. The wallpaper in the hallways is peeling and the room doors, which were once white are now grey and stained. The breakfast was a mess of wilted vegetables, fruits drowning in their own juices and greasy curries. On the livelier side, the hotel is surrounded by street food, buskers--and endless teams of prostitutes patrolling the sidewalks until dawn.

Good
Central location for what we wanted to do. However, the 7th floor looked very tired and was in need of decorating. The room also needed an update.

watered down
The plumbing was in the shits. Both sink and bathtub plugs were not working so the plumbing staff had to remove it completely... means no tub to use and no way to hold water on the sink. Some basics are just too important to not mention . I’ve stayed at other RC properties before - this is the first time I have had such a watered down experience at royal chulan 😢

on my third stay ....
This is my third stay at the hotel and unfortunately it wasn't the best. Our safe did not work and needed to be replaced, our TV did not work and needed the remote replaced, The toilet had a problem. The hairdryer also was not up to it. We had to ring three times to get our laundry delivered. We upgraded to an executive suite after our first night (RM 750 for the remaining five nights) on top of our rate paid for the Deluxe room. This was much better although the toilet was blocked when we arrived. I am not sure why we were booked into the furtherest room from the lifts as it was clear there were not many others staying on our floor. The Club lounge was shut half of the time we went there but the breakfast was ok the days it was open. The staff are friendly, the food was good and so is the pool. The location is good too. The standard rooms and hallways are in need of a freshening up and I hope things get sorted out to make me want to come back again.
