Nice, if expensive, ryokan in great location
Great location, pleasant accommodations, great English-speaking staff. It‘s a little expensive for an older (ie slightly run down) Ryokan, but it was a very nice experience. You are definitely paying for the location, which is fantastic if you want easy access to the Gion area and Kawaramachi. Not sure if the Ryokan was just incredibly quiet or if it was empty during our stay in late January. We had the Kaiseki dinner one night and enjoyed it. Largely seafood, so if that isn’t your cup of tea it might not suit you. The public bath was also very nice.

Great value, not a fan of the food
Phenomenal value and experience. Significantly exceeded expectations. I don’t think I could do a ryokan for my entire trip but highly recommend for a couple nights. Comes with what seems like a 10 course traditional Japanese meal. I personally, did not enjoy most of the dishes but it was quite the experience

Comfortable take on Ryokan experience
Voted top 10 Ryokan in Japan by some, we stayed for 1 night to try. Even though we only got a standard room, it's more spacious than we can imagine. It's like an apartment with everything (minus the kitchen). Your feet would feel great on the tatami's. Very well decorated and calming. Do need some time to get used to the traditional bed experience though. Location is superb, next to one main temple, while just need to walk down the slope to the heart of Gion area. Didn't try the food, maybe next time

Beautiful property in the heart of a gorgeous area
Kyoto is stunning and staying at a ryokan was a wonderful experience but I wish we had only done one night given the "futon" beds on the floor - even the pillows were incredibly hard on our bodies unfortunately. The staff was lovely and the property is gorgeous. Loved the onsen too! We didn't originally pay for dinner but ended up adding on with other family staying at Gion Hatanaka - keseiki isn't something I'll likely want to try again but both dinner and breakfast were an experience! It's steps away from a park/temple area which we walked through everyday to/from just to enjoy the scenery. If you're staying in Kyoto for more then one night, I'd recommend one night and other nights somewhere a bit more comfortable but that could just be because I'm used to Western comforts/food.

Peaceful Spot in Gion
This place is absolutely gorgeous and so comfortable. Rooms are spacious with all amenities provided. I did not get the meal set but that looked amazing as well!

I was disappointed in Kaiseki meal which we had in the hotel. First, the fish is over cooked. Secondly, I didn’t feel relaxing during the whole meal. It was rushed. The staffs are nice overall.

So lucky to be able to book a night!
We were so lucky to be able to squeeze into Gion Hatanaka during the extreme busy Sakura season. The beautiful ryokan sits right beside Yasaka Shrine but comfortably far from the crazy tourist crowds. I believe they represent the real Japanese standard of services. It is the most memorable highlight in my stay in Kyoto.
