Rooming House
My room on the ground floor did not have any of the charm suggested in the photo. It was drab and dingy, the walls were thin, the window inset on the door was covered by a pinned up blanket, the furnishings were cheap and flimsy, the single towel provided was worn and pilled, and there was a plasticized sign in the bathroom warning about the possibility of a blocked toilet with instructions to use the plunger in the event of! The housekeeper is a lovely woman, but had so doused the room with perfumed deodorizer that I had the window (which opened onto a narrow canyon between two buildings) wide for hours to air it out. On the second night of my stay someone was drilling until after 10 pm in the room immediately adjacent, and I was woken at 1.30 am by loud guests coming in the front door. That was the "straw" that prompted my decision to move to another place for the last 2 nights of my stay in Toronto. I texted the host immediately to let him know, and requested a refund. He indicated he would do so, but then became evasive. My mistake for not being more discerning when cash payment was required! The area is also a bit dodgy, and a fair ways from public transit.

Funky area, comfy accomodations
This location is in the up-and-coming Cabbagetown section of Toronto, so you have delapidated next to fabulously restored, and Bohemian-feel overall. If you can take "funky" but looking for Comfy--this place is true to its name. Very clean, excellent beds and modern bathrooms, "prepare your own food" kitchen well appointed (no served breakfast here!) and international clientele are hallmarks. Price can't be beat for the convenient location! Very friendly and accommodating host rounds up the picture. If you can carry your bag upstairs (no elevator), are not looking for chain-hotel conveniences and don't mind cooking for yourself or going to convenience store or one of the nearby restaurants, this is THE place to check out!

Value for money was really good. I was attending a conference just a few blocks away and it was nice to find something like home. The hosts were very kind and thoughtful offering suggestions on eating places and showing me how everything worked in the kitchen. Being an older residential building the walls were thin and I found it difficult to fall asleep with a semi noisy neighbour. I think that could’ve be remedied by earplugs though. The bed was comfy and the room and bathroom were very clean.

Ethics lacking.
I would likely have given this guest house a rating of three until checkout and this morning when I received an email from Tahir, the owner. Tahir was very personable when we arrived and explained everything to us in detail. He was very accommodating and helpful. When we were getting ready to leave and again in an email a few days later he asked if we would favor him with a rating of five as it would help him in his rankings. In other words Tahir, you asked me be dishonest if my opinion is a rating of less than five was warranted. Sorry, not the way I do business. There was mold starting to form on the bathtub and substantial dust on the baseboards under the table. Other than these the premises was very clean.

Affordable, good location, welcoming
This guest house was a nice place to stay when I was in town for a conference. I had the third floor suite and it was very much worth the extra price. The space was clean and quite roomy, it had its own private bathroom, had a small fridge and microwave, and best of all was the large private deck! I enjoyed sitting out on this deck every morning for breakfast, and a couple of nights when it wasn't too cold. It had a nice view of the skyline, especially at sunset and during the night. The deck also provided some interaction with local wildlife as some black squirrels frequently came by to visit and birds stopped by to enjoy the berries that were being grown outside. Most of the other guests have covered some of the particulars of this place that guests might want to know before staying here. Having to take shoes on and off was a bit of a pain at first, but I had read ahead and brought my own socks and slippers to wear around so that alleviated some of the annoyance (and everything was so clean that I wasn't afraid to walk around barefoot when it was too hot to even think about slippers). Tahir and Vivian were very welcoming and helpful but not too intrusive. I definitely recommend this place for anyone going to Toronto, and I definitely felt a little smug at the good price and nice accommodations that I got while some of my colleagues were paying $250+ per night for rooms that they were dissatisfied with in hotels.
