It was hard to get even a smile when we checked in. Even eye contact would have been nice. This attitude continued throughout our stay. The Hall table of hot water ran out of not only water but also coffee and milk. Asking politely for it to be replenished was I treated with disdain. I can cope with a pretty basic room but the service was very poor. As a Kiwi traveling with my overseas wife I felt embarrassed by the complete lack of service and social graces shown by the staff. Fortunately the other Waitomo experiences were much better.

A peice of NZs history
We came to The Waitomo Caves Hotel to appreciate the grandeur of a grand old lady wrapped in some of NZs history. Upon arrival we were greeted by front of house manager Roh and were made to feel special from the time that we walked in. Our dinner in the Lazy Trout was of international standard complimented by a Cab Sav Graggy Range wine chosen from a superb selection. The hotel is a little tired but what do you expect of something that is 120yrs old. Slowly being renovated room by room. Our room was comfortable with a deluxe king bed with beautiful white crisp linen and our own private deck overlooking the Waitomo valley. Breakfast was equally as good as dinner and our compliments to both chefs. Like Roh, the day duty manager, Sue was just as delightful and making us want to come back for another stay. When staying, look past the tiredness and enjoy a beautiful place that one Queen Elizabeth II stayed at in 1953 We highly recommend a stay there.

Great stay
Very helpful staff who saw my walking stick and immediately gave us a ground floor room. The lack of a lift could be a problem for some.

Grand and majestic
The hotel was really grand and majestic looking with heaps of character. We weren’t expecting it to be immaculate from other reviews and it wasn’t, the bathrooms need some work, but it is an old hotel so it’s all good. Great location close to the local area and a real taste of old NZ.

Old hotel on the hill
Great short stay away. Hotel is needing a lot of upgrading. We had a family room for 4 which was very roomy, clean and comfy beds with a great view over Waitomo.

Stayed here for two nights, when we left for the day and returned we were expecting housekeeping to have cleaned the room and leave fresh linen. Neither of which happened. I think the hotel has big potential based around its unique character due to its age. It will be interesting to see what happens after they have finished renovating.

Enjoyed our night here, it is very comfortable and considering the hotels age it stands beautifully. Our host lady was magic, and made us feel at home. The meals were great so look forward to going back again.

Property is a lovely historical hotel but in much need of some love. Our bedroom door was sticky to open and you had to push hard to close. The carpet in the dining room is thread bare and dirty. Filter coffee was delicious at breakfast was was the bacon. Lovely and Smokey. Overall good for a night

Nice looking old hotel from afar. An unkempt mess up close. Gardens and exterior were uncared for, overgrown and not a place for "hanging out". The room was clean, but unfortunately the little milks they give so you can have a coffee curdled mine. Let's talk about the "Jacuzzi" they talk up. We opened the lid and saw a bunch of residue or something in the bottom, and it reeked of moldy/mildew. Needless to say, we didn't get in. They've made the room look like a beautiful old bath house, but without the privacy from the outside world. Think "fishbowl like" windows. It really has the potential to be a beautiful room, but like the rest of the hotel - no one seems to care. The menu was nice. Shame the "flowers" on the table were brown and sitting in brown water. They weren't flowers either, just some shrubbery. The checkin lady was an unfriendly cow. We had a tour that we needed to be at by 2.30pm and it was a 20 minute drive from our accomodation. All we asked was for an extra half hour to check in so we could sort ourselves out. But she wasn't having it. We seemed like an intrusion into her day. This hotel also seems to have signed me up to a random mailing list for Hilton Honors. a) I can't believe this hotel would EVER be part of a hilton group, and b) how rude to do that without permission. Overall, 3-stars. It was a place to sleep and eat. But the owners really should refurbish it to it's rightful glory - and for the love of god, do something about the disgusting spa
