Not the best hotel if you like a good nights sleep
I had heard about The Avery and how great it was, and there are clearly some great reviews, sadly, I didn't have the best experience. Besides the bathroom not being as clean as you would hope, if you enjoy your sleep, do not stay here (or at least in room 15). The walls are very thin and one night I was awoken to someone being violently ill and had to listen to it for more than 20 mins. The next night, a new couple arrived at 11:45 and couldn't have been louder. They settled down pretty quickly but then awoke at 7AM only to go right back to being loud. The reply from the front desk? "It is an old building, so the walls are thin." Well, it's clearly been renovated, you couldn't spring for some insulation or dynamat? They do include breakfast but it is very simple: muffins, tea, coffee, some fruit. So, if you want something a bit more substantial, you will have to go somewhere on M Street (closest area with restaurants). It sits in a wonderful neighborhood and you would think it would be quiet but all night there is traffic on the street, including quite a few dump trucks. Overall, if you value your sleep, this is not the place for you. The staff is freindly and they do offer free drinks in the afternoon, which is nice but sadly, for me, not nice enough to overcome two lousy nights of sleep.

Not a hotel but guesthouse
The avery turned out to be a guesthouse instead of hotel. The rooms and bathrooms are spacious, comfortabel and modern design. There is no elevator. But staff offered to carry the luggage upstairs carrying it up the various stairs. Some further remarks: the room refrigerator was hardly cooling. The bathtub had no handshower. We were surprised that the Avery Georgetown is a small guesthouse and not a hotel. This is not clearly advertised at ''. So the info is misleading. Also the information that the regular price is in the range of USD 650-700/night with a special price offer in the range of USD 200 is misleading. Compared to other hotel or guesthouse in the same area the 'value for money'- room price should rather be in the price range of USD150-200. Another remark is that it advertises 'including breakfast'. At 9.30am we came for breakfast but then they told us that it is from 7.00-9.00am but this info was not divulged at check-in. Anyway we learned from other guests that it is a small continental breakfast of coffee and some pastries.

Surprise Delight
The entry to hotel a little off putting. You walk directly off street to a small bar beside a hallway. You check in at the bar and luckily my room was first floor because I did not see an elevator. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was also unusual- dated wallpaper but an updated good size bathroom (no tub but nice shower). The layout of the room is what worked- my daughter and I could sleep in different rooms (using sofa bed) with a door in between. No closet or drawers, just hanging rack and a shelf. It had a small refrigerator. The feel of the hotel is old house/ trying to be boutique hotel. A little investment in updating decor and front area would elevate the quality of the hotel but would also make it probably just another too expensive place to stay. The location was great for walking to M street. There is also a 7/11 across the street. I grew to appreciate the size and quietness of this hotel. I would stay here again.

Might return but I expect more at this price range
Beautiful room in a sharply modernized old house. Everything was clean and functional. Bathroom water pressure was terrible; I felt like I was showering under a watering can. The room didn't let in any street noise, but we heard people passing by in the hallway very easily. Evening clerk told us breakfast would be available from 7-10a, but when we came out to the lobby at 9:30a, everything had already been stowed and the coffee pot was being cleaned. The desk clerk pulled out some fruit and pastries for us, but we had to buy coffee from the 7-Eleven across the street. Prompt valet service, though it cost $50 and required the sole apparent staffer to leave the desk unattended while parking/retrieving cars.

Lovely hotel in Georgetown
Stayed for three nights at the end of August. Hotel staff are very helpful & friendly particularly Jeremy & Gwen. Room was clean, bed comfortable, bathroom was large & airy, overhead shower had very good pressure. TV has lots of channels including ones that show old films during the day - great for when getting ready in the morning. Breakfast for us is an important meal & the free breakfast that the hotel offers is just a few pastries, not enough for us but could be enough for those who don't eat much at breakfast. Tea/coffee provided although there was no English Breakfast so we had to go & buy from the 7-11 across the road.
