Noisy, cramped, not great
There is little accommodation in Glenorchy, so you do not have much choice. I also recognise that the building itself is an old wooden one, and possibly difficult to work with. But despite booking one of the bigger rooms on the first floor, the room was rather small and awkwardly shaped. It had no table, and no chairs, so the only place to sit was on the bed! Yet there was room for at the very least a small table and perhaps folding chairs or stools. We knew it had no cooking facilities, microwave, or toaster, but I think there was room for these. The wifi was virtually unusably slow (though this was not untypical for motels and hotels in NZ). But perhaps the biggest issue was the difficulty of getting a decent nights sleep due to the amount of noise. Partly this was due to thin walls, so you could really hear your neighbours talking, on the phone etc, but mostly it was due to the loud, drunken behaviour of guests at the restaurant/bar of the lodge, and the hotel opposite. The room was clean, but unserviced at any point in our three day visit, which was not our general experience in NZ. WE saw clearly into one of the lower, ground floor rooms, and it was even worse, really no better than a double backpacker room.

Poor 2.0
We were scheduled to stay at the hotel on 2 separate nights. Having missed a flight we were unable to make it out there for 1 night and called the hotel to notify. The Manager said he’d see to it that we got a complimentary breakfast or dinner since he could not refund our monies since we called inside the 24 hour window. However, on arrival - we were given no such courtesy. To top that off he was RUDE and offered a refund if we did not like the room and said we could find a room elsewhere. The room was up a flight of stairs in a corner overlooking a backyard full stuff. And, the smell of sewage was overpowering with the loud noise of a Sewage truck right below the balcony of our room. Customer Service is the last industry he should be working in. New Zealand hospitality was great until we encountered the manager at the Bold Peak Lodge in Glenorchy.

Very good 8.0
Couple on weekend away
The newly reburbished room was excellent, food at the Sugar Loaf Cafe was delicious, and the (Allpress) coffee's were the fastest served I have ever had. And they were very good! The communal spaces are fairly tired and I presume will be updated soon, but it doesn't really matter when the rooms are great! My only tip would be, we had high dormer windows in our room which are not all curtained at the top. They make a lovely bright sunny room with views of the mountains from bed. However, we live on a farm so I found the brightness from the streetlights made it a little hard to get to sleep. If you were just off a longhaul flight or sensitive to light at night and need to sleep in maybe bring a sleep mask!

Poor 2.0
Unsatisfactory location
This location has no lobby or reception area. Room key was provided by barman in adjacent building. Room was frumpy and aged with bathroom surprisingly modern and convenient. King-size bed had the hardest mattress ever experienced. No furniture in room apart from a skimpy closet which had a meager assortment of cups, glasses, plates and electric jug stored. There was no convenient way to fill jug with water as bathroom sink tap was too low. Small refrigerator enclosed in bottom of closet appeared to run very hot. Wifi didn't work so was given password to neighboring bar Admin account, which operated spasmodically. Room was situated 30 meters from a noisy bar with shouting and music late into the night. At half the cost this location would be grossly overpriced. Truly unsuitable accommodation in every sense, with absolutely no ambience or surrounding attraction. Outside wooden table had discarded liquor bottles & empty paper wrappers left on top during whole stay. No room refresh was provided for second night's stay with bed unmade and no towels replaced. Do not stay at this location - take a tent instead.

Exceptional 10.0
Boutique Lodge Great After Tramping
We had a lovely stay after a Routeburn Track journey finishing in Glenorchy. The Lodge was easy to find, but then a bit confusing to get sorted at. Two buildings with different signage and no obvious check-in location had me wandering around the property until a staff came to my rescue. But once in place, we very much enjoyed the facilities. The staff were attentive and all went well. We chose to follow the lead of the locals and eat over at the Glenorchy Cafe rather than at the coffee bar in the Bold Peak Lodge building. When your dining choices in town are 1) a coffee shop, 2) a Speights bar and 3) A locally-popular and well rated Cafe, the preference seems fairly obvious (especially in hind-sight).
