4/10 Fair

Noisy and disappointing
We booked the Victoria due to it having an option for a dog being pet friendly. Upon arriving, we were told that we had to pay $20 to have the dog stay although there was nothing of this stated in the booking. The reason was for cleaning, and in essence we have no problem with this, however when the room we stayed in was pathetically dirty, then we have an issue. The hotel is located directly opposite a busy pub and also the coal train line so the noise was as if a train is directly in your room all night. The living room was ok, but a whole family booked the other rooms and left no space for us. Disappointed and would not recommend.

Best history stay in Maitland
Fantastic glimps into past reality. 2nd house built in Maitland c1835 and shows how it really was. U/stairs bathooms is an add on that needs a biog makeover. You can see its a priovately owned labour of love that would cost $M's to update fully. If you love history and can put up with a few of the old inconvieniences this is a must. The best restaurant in Maitland is in the building and after the food & wine you are back nearly 200 years. We will make this a regular.

A little too old!
I usually love staying in properties that have character, but this stay was a little odd. I booked The Victoria Room which was at the front of the accommodation. A little more expensive, but it was a larger room and I was travelling with my small dogs. I received a text message a couple of hours before arrival to see when I would be arriving. All good. On arrival the place was locked up and I was about to call the number on the door, when it opened. I was greeted by a young man who showed me up to my room on very rickety stairs. I think the only thing holding them together is the carpet. On the right was the shared bathroom 😬 and on he left my room and again on the right the sitting room. The key to my room was in the door and handed to me then he young man disappeared back down stairs never to be seen again. I was apparently the only person staying that particular night. That was a bit creepy. Anyway the room was extremely hot but the fan didn’t work. There were no screens on the windows, but in the end I had to close them because of the frequent loud train noise and noise from the pub across the road. Quite an uncomfortable night for sleeping as a result. In addition, the bathroom had cockroaches running across the floor. I think a little maintenance is needed to make this place a bit more comfortable.
