Fair 4.0
This hotel was suffering teething problems when I stayed. Check in took a long time unless you paid extra for priority check in. I was staying two nights. I arrived early evening. The next day I left before nine as I was at a conference all day. I returned around 5.00pm desperate for a cup of tea and a rest before I went out to the theatre. The room had not been made up. I couldn’t have a cup of tea because I had no clean cup. I rang housekeeping for a cup. They asked if I wanted the room cleaned but I said no because I wanted to rest. A knock on the door and I thought my cup had arrived, but it was a cleaning team to service my room. I explained I wanted to rest. My cup arrived and having checked the supplies I asked for more tea and milk. Then another cleaning team arrived. I then had a phone call from reception asking if I would like to move to another room. Again I explained that as I was leaving before 6.00am I really just wanted to rest. Some extra tea bags arrived but I never got the milk. Apart from that the hotel was new and in a good location, although the room was rather small.

Good 6.0
The staff made us check our bags with the bellman due to no rooms being available when we tried to check in. To us, this wasn’t a big deal. We went and walked around the city and came back later. Upon our return one of our bags had been left sitting, unattended, in the hotel lobby where anyone could have walked off with it at any moment. When we brought this to the attention of the manager, he said that someone had their eyes on it at all times. They didn’t, because when we came back, no one was at the reception stand to greet us. This was extremely frustrating and not at all what you’d expect from a luxury hotel. Other than this, the hotel was very nice but didn’t have much in the way of amenities and they even charged for access to the gym. Like I said, it’s a nice enough hotel, the beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean, but sometimes you expect more from a “luxury hotel.”

Exceptional 10.0
Be aware of the bathroom!
Compact but well laid out room. I asked for a quiet room as I’m a light sleeper and they certainly delivered - no noise at all. The only thing I disliked was the bathroom layout. The shower and toilet open directly into the room and the walls don’t go all the way to the ceiling so there is zero privacy when using the toilet or getting dry and dressed after a shower. Not an issue if you are travelling alone but you need to be on rather intimate terms with your room mate with this arrangement. I was with my teenage son and the lack of privacy was not ideal. Also means you cannot get up and use the bathroom without turning lights on in the actual room and disturbing the other occupant. Poorly thought out design in my opinion. Would definitely stay here again on my own or would be mindful of who I was sharing with. It’s an unbeatable location, everything is new and nice and the staff were lovely.

Very good 8.0
Staff at check in were pleasant and courteous. I asked if the room would have a dental kit as an included amenity, they advised it would cost me $2, which I didn't mind paying for. As for the room, the sink and mirror are located OUTSIDE the bathroom, i.e. right next to the bed. I didn't mind this as I was staying alone, but if I wasn't alone, it may be a little lacking in privacy. Otherwise, the room itself was clean. The bed and pillow was super duper comfy. And they gave me a $10 for going green and not requesting to change my towels. I had a happy hour 2-for-1 cocktail at their bar Floyd's, but was told I have to order 2 of the exact same cocktails which was a little disappointing. Service at Flyod's was also quite slow, everyone else received bar nuts except for me, again, slightly disappointing that they could miss me.

Very good 8.0
Everything is nice and new in this Ibis hotel, which shares the building with Novotel. The location is obviously close to the Melbourne Central shopping centre and train station in the CBD. The standard room is very compact but the layout is quite efficient and there is still a large flat screen TV, wardrobe space, iron, ironing board, safe, hairdryer and mini-fridge (which was empty even though it had a mini-bar price list on it). No balcony. The bed and bedding are new and comfortable, and the mattress is a proper single piece (not two pieces strapped together). The wash basin and mirror are in the room itself as the bathroom is tiny, but that arrangement works fine. The shower has good water pressure and water temperature. The only thing the room is really missing is table space and a chair, which would make it much easier to use a laptop.
