Exploring Perth City Centre

The beating heart of Western Australia’s capital city ultimately lies within the city’s central business district. Perth City Centre is more than just a bastion for suit-clad men and sky-soaring buildings. It is home to a vibrant shopping and entertainment district, not to mention dozens of fascinating landmarks. Forrest Place is one of the busiest areas of the CBD, as a pedestrian mall, the central train station, fine restaurants, and a world-class department store are found here. Plenty of other establishments of interest reside in or near the city centre, too, including the fabulously relaxing Kings Park, the Western Australian Museum, and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

A large variety of hotels are available within Perth City Centre, from high-end, world-renowned hotel chains to less-expensive, yet comfortable, holiday apartments. Most hotels are only a few minutes’ walk from Perth’s central train station and Wellington Street bus depot, which connects the downtown area with landmarks outside the city centre. A limited ferry service is available from the southern-most reaches of the downtown district.

Sights nearby

Perth City Centre is the most visited district in Western Australia. Filled with dazzling shopping and entertaining attractions, this downtown district is the ideal place to stay while holidaying in this western state’s capital city.

- Kings Park and Botanic Garden

One of the most iconic landmarks in Perth is Kings Park. This massive green space is teeming with tourist landmarks, not to mention a plethora of paths that meander through natural bushland, well-landscaped gardens, and grassed picnic areas. The park is only a few minutes on foot from most of Perth’s centrally situated hotels as it overlooks the Swan River. The 18-hectare botanic gardens are located inside Kings Park. This beautifully-built park includes over 2,000 native floral species and has welcomed millions of visitors since its establishment in 1965. Kings Park plays host to Australia’s most famous floral festival each September.

- Art Gallery of Western Australia

If tourists are looking to spend several interesting hours in the city centre, they can check out the Art Gallery of Western Australia, which rests upon Roe Street, in the heart of the downtown district. The gallery is part of the Perth Cultural Centre and includes a massive collection of contemporary artwork from across the state. Plenty of exciting indigenous Australian artwork is housed within the museum alongside internationally-influenced temporary exhibitions.

- Murray Street Mall

One of the busiest streets in Perth, Murray Street, is a fantastic tourist destination. Partly pedestrianized, this strip is an east-west running avenue in the heart of Perth. It is a great place for shopping, dining, and soaking up the busy CBD culture. Several arcades connect this bustling shopping mall to the other pedestrianised mall in Perth city centre, Hay Street. The reputable Miss Maud Swedish Hotel is found directly on Murray Street, not far from the mall, making it easy for guests to access this incredible retail strip.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Hay Street and Murray Street are the primary shopping zones in Perth city centre. Forrest Place is worth checking out, as are King Street and the corner of Wellington Street. These areas are home to the liveliest dining scenes in downtown Perth. However, tourists will also find a wide range of elegant dining experiences in city centre hotels such as the Pan Pacific Perth and the Mercure Hotel Perth. The CBD is home to a range of clubs and pubs for after-dark entertainment, especially along Murray Street.

Public transport

The inner-city public bus network, known as Central Area Transit (CAT), is free for passengers. This means tourists who are looking to get around Perth City Centre can do so without charge by bus. The CAT service has several routes which take between five and 15 minutes to complete. Perth Central Railway Station is the main train hub in the city centre. Railway connections are focused on the northern reaches of the inner city, making them of limited use for sightseeing. There is also a ferry service that travels across the Swan River, leaving from the CBD’s Barrack Street Jetty.
