Learn more about Bologna

Beneath medieval towers that lean like tipsy professors, Bologna's terracotta skyline glows amber at sunset. The Piazza Maggiore buzzes with students from the world's oldest university, debating philosophy over plates of perfect tortellini. Climb the precarious wooden stairs of Torre Asinelli for views that explain why they call this 'La Rossa.' The city unfolds beneath 40 kilometres of porticoes – now UNESCO-listed – where locals have strolled protected from rain since the Middle Ages. In the Quadrilatero market, vendors offer mortadella with the reverence others reserve for fine art. Don't miss the unfinished façade of San Petronio Basilica or Neptune's fountain, where the sea god's proportions were strategically reduced to avoid offending papal sensibilities.

"We arrived in Bologna by train for a 2-night stay and the Starhotels Excelsior was a great place to land. The hotel is directly across the street from the train station and within a 20 minute walk to the center of town, which made it ideal for our needs. The front desk staff were helpful and efficient, and the room was spacious - you could walk around without tripping over suitcases - with a comfortable bed. Also, it was very quiet inside the room - any noise from the street below did not reach inside our room. The hotel was a basic place to stay for a couple of nights and met our needs perfectly."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Bologna

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most budget-friendly time to visit Bologna is during January, February, and August, when hotel prices are typically lower. For a great value for money experience, at least 2 to 3 days is recommended to fully appreciate the city’s prominent historical landmarks and cultural attractions. While exploring, you can visit impressive monuments, fascinating museums, charming cafes, the prestigious university, the stunning cathedral, and various churches, all of which contribute to Bologna's rich heritage. You can also enjoy some delightful dining experiences and browse through local shops, making this an ideal trip for those on a budget.
  2. 3. Be flexible with dates: Prices can fluctuate due to factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates may help you save on your stay in a Bologna hotel. If you're in search of something unique, boutique hotels often provide a more personalised experience and can sometimes offer better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we'll inform you whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price is on the higher end, we’ll suggest more affordable dates, which could help you secure a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels located near the city centre usually tend to be pricier, but thanks to Bologna's fantastic public transport options, you might discover a more affordable independent hotel a bit further out that remains well-connected. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even some lesser-known nearby towns, there's often excellent value to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations can provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
