Learn more about Akureyri
Beneath snow-capped mountains, this northern capital offers unexpected delights at every turn. Dip into the Forest Lagoon's geothermal waters while gazing across the fjord at winter's alpenglow. Whale watching boats depart daily from the harbour, where captains speak of humpbacks with familiar affection. The botanical garden defies its Arctic location with thousands of thriving plant species. After dark, the northern lights often perform their ethereal dance above town. Hafnarstræti's microbreweries pour craft beers with quirky names while locals debate summer's midnight sun versus winter's ski slopes at Hlíðarfjall. The Aviation Museum and Nonnahús offer cultural respite when the weather turns, though locals insist there's no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.

Hotel Halond
"So, this is a somewhat unusual hotel in that there were effectively no visible staff during my entire stay. Access to the building and to my room was via a pin code sent me (it came through Expedia’s message system and since the email notifications connected to it get mostly filtered into spam by gmail, I had a moment of panic while driving to Akureyri that I would arrive in the wee hours of the morning and not be able to access a room I paid for, but fortunately, that was not an issue. I didn’t get the breakfast either of the two mornings that I was there, so I can’t comment on that. The room was the nicest of all the rooms I stayed in while in Iceland and the in-room television supports Airplay so I was able to do things like watch streaming videos or play music from my phone to it which was nice. The one lack I would point at would be that the rooms have fridges but not microwaves, so don’t expect to make yourself a hot meal in your room, but otherwise, it was a great place to stay and should I ever return to Akureyri, I will definitely stay here again."

"Great beds and space, awkward to get to with lots of baggage, beautiful though"
Hafnarstræti Hostel
"We had a good stay here. The kitchen was a fully-equipped industrial kitchen with a very efficient dishwasher and lots of utensils, as well of heaps of space to sit in the common area. There was also free coffee and tea. Plenty of bathrooms were provided and they were clean and comfortable. The staff were also friendly to us. The pods were comfortable and there was a lot of room to store your belongings, as well as more room on shelves outside (less safe, but that wasn't an issue for us). The little lights in the pods didn't seem to go out at night, which was a little annoying, but we just covered them up. There was a TV in the pod that you could cast to, so that was nice, and the Wi-Fi worked well—I was able to take several Zoom calls with no issues. The soundproofing between the pods and the hallways isn't great, and it didn't seem like quiet hours were enforced. A large group of teenagers were quite loud during the night, so that was a bit frustrating and disrupted our sleep. Luggage storage was provided, but as it cost money, most people just seemed to put their bags on the shelves."

"A good quality friendly hotel with good breakfast and a good restaurant for evening meals and good bedrooms for a very reasonable price and only 20 minutes walk down to the harbour, 10 minutes walk to the centre and shops. Would recommend."
Hotel Sveinbjarnargerdi
"Very clean, well staffed, comfy beds. Great breakfast buffet included. Hot tub!"
Hotel Akureyri
"This hotel is fantastic! The rooms are very beautifully appointed - very modern and thoughtful in what is important for couples traveling. The breakfast is impressive. The location is walking distance to everything center city. The staff from reception to dining room to housekeeping - the best! For future travelers I would recommend new photos be added as the current photos really do not reflect this wonderful property!"
K16 apartments
"Wonderful host who made everything so smooth. There was no parking available at the location, but we were told we could park for free on a side street. The laundry was free and even the tide pods were free! Great kitchen and layout of the apartment."

"Beautiful property. New hotel. Definite recommend"
North Mountain View Suites

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Akureyri
- Book for the cheapest times: The most budget-friendly time to visit Akureyri is during January, November, and December, when hotel prices are generally lower. For an enriching experience, it's recommended to stay for at least 1 to 2 days to discover the city's key landmarks, cultural sites, and natural wonders. You can enjoy activities such as whale watching, visiting cafes and museums, hiking, and sightseeing, as well as experiencing the northern lights. This timeframe provides great value for money, allowing you to explore beautiful gardens, swimming spots, and shopping opportunities while sticking to your budget.
- Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: To uncover last-minute deals for hotels in Akureyri, you may discover the DealsOpens in a new window or Last-Minute Deals sections on Hotels.com, where discounted rates could be available as your travel date approaches. - Be flexible with dates: Prices can fluctuate due to factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates might help you save on your stay in an Akureyri hotel. If you're after something a bit different, boutique hotels can provide a more personalised experience and potentially better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we’ll inform you whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price is on the higher side, we'll suggest alternative dates that could be more affordable, helping you to secure a better deal.
- Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre usually tend to be pricier, but thanks to Akureyri's fantastic public transport connections, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel a bit further out that’s still well linked. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there’s often excellent value for money to be found.
