Old Rail Cultural Shopping District is a pedestrianised shopping area in downtown Hualien. The paved road surface is ideal for walking on, and there are smart shops and good signage. The name "Old Rail" comes from the fact that trains used to pass through here. Following relocation of the train lines in Hualien, the area fell into a state of decay. Many new shops opened and large numbers of tourists now flock here, making the area a new attraction in Hualien. The shopping area has many indigenous shops and fashion boutiques aimed at younger shoppers. Scores of young people gather here on weekend evenings, and you'll often see street performers.
