Location is the only thing in its favor
This hotel being close to Universal Studios gets a fair bit of foot traffic, but does not have the space or staff to cater to the needs of its guests. The first night when we arrived, we wanted to get extra blankets. The phone in the room was unplugged, so the handset was not charged/not working, but after 2 phone calls (using speakerphone) & 30 minutes of wait, the blankets did finally arrive. The pull out mattress in the convertible sofa-bed was terrible. The second night we found a cockroach running around in the room and after an entertaining chase, I was finally able to squash it. I then kicked the dead cockroach near the trash can, hoping that room service will clean it the next day. We came back from Universal the next day to find the dead cockroach still there! The breakfast place is so small that there is huge line every morning to get to the buffet after 8am and it stays like that until 9.30am when the breakfast ends. The walls are paper thin, and we could hear the kids playing in the next room. The bathroom is so small that you have to tango between the door and the toilet seat to get in and out of the bathroom. The ice dispensers are only located on odd number floors (Floors 3, 5 and 7). To top it all off, even though my booking was paid for through Expedia, the hotel decided to charge me again for the room. When I called them, all they could do was refer me to accounts department, which was closed for the rest of the week! Terrible experience overall!

family vacation
From the time we checked in, until the time we checked out, the staff and management was very kind and courteous. The entire hotel and our room was very clean, which is most important to me because this was a trip that I brought my children. We went to the lobby for breakfast and there were nutritious options and that was also a plus in my book. I asked for a Starbucks coffee as we were leaving, and the manager gave it to me for free. This hotel was on point and I would go again.

Close to Universal
The Hyatt Place Universal has always been our hotel of choice twice yearly, 21 nights stay each time for the last 5 years. I am therefore saddened to say, not confident we will when we return in March. We arrived the day before hurricane Irma hit, the hotel staff were excellent throughout, even with no power, hotel had to close, so we moved to the Hyatt Place, convention centre, which was a lovely hotel, again fantastic staff. However as we preferred being near Universal as you can walk to it, we asked if the Hyatt place, Universal was open and fully functional and if so could we return for last week, which the answer was yes, no problem. On return to the hyatt place Universal, the room we got had a distinct unpleasant odour, sort of musty/damp. We reported it to reception 3 times, Each time I was told they would investigate, it never improved, we bought air fresheners to spray, but only masked the odour for a short time, we never got told if anything was done, assuming not as each time I reported it, no reference to previous report . On checkout I again raised it "I'm so sorry about that", confirmed the charge on the room, was the response, and we left. We didn't get housekeeping twice, apparently we had privacy door hanger on between 9.00 and 9.30am? Not the end of the world. Hotel near universal, good breakfast and friendly staff.

Great for Universal
Place was great overall. The shuttle to the park was easy to schedule but getting back wasn’t as easy because of overcrowded shuttle so we walked. Breakfast was restaurant quality and more than good enough...especially free. Only issues were that bar and store were not robust, coffee service wasn’t all day, a/c in room was crazy loud, and one of two elevators didn’t work all the time. Even with those minor issues, would highly recommend this hotel if you are going to Universal.

Close to Universal but closer to construction
The hotel is in the middle of a construction zone. There is an I-4 overpass and road to the south and a new building being constructed to the immediate north. The road to the hotel is also diverted by construction. The hotel room came with its own offer of ear plugs, although the construction quieted down at night. Not so our air conditioner, which when turned on had a perpetual whine like a jet engine. I only stayed for one night, but complained about it to the staff in mid-afternoon and never saw anyone come to fix it. The hotel is smaller and less appointed than other Hyatts I have visited, but the staff was generally very good, the place was generally clean and the room was comfortable. I appreciated the two bed plus sofa bed arrangement because I was travelling with two older but not emancipated children. The breakfast was nice (and well-attended by many guests) and they accommodated me after I checked out but was waiting for my children to return from their adventures. The hotel is within reasonable walking distance of Universal which was quite helpful. When the I-4 construction is done, the hotel will be very close to a new interchange. The other construction should end within the year. I'd ask about the state of construction before you book.
