Worth a visit
This place is very transparent. They claim the property is 70 years old. It being as old as it is it’s very nice. Shows some aspects of age but I enjoyed my stay. For the price I got what I paid for. If need I would stay again.

Cute retro hotel
Cute family owned hotel. It’s an old place that has been refurbished and retained retro style with modern conveniences (wifi, refrigerator, microwave). It’s well taken care of, clean, comfortable, and in good location. Proprietors were very friendly. My only recommendation for the owners is add some curtains to better block out light (this is a common hotel issue). I will definitely stay here again if in the area.

The room was comfortable. Good size with large bathroom and shower. The downside is room service will come in whether you want them to or not.

If you're ever in the Alpena, Michigan area, consider the Big Bear Lodge. The motel is seventy years old, but very well maintained. Clean, quaint, and the owners are all you could ask for, kind and informative! In the lobby there are even paintings made by her! A great experience! The rooms are clean, and the beds are comfy! You're definitely going to want to make reservations as with anyplace that shines in what they do, you don't want to be taking chances that they're full up!

We enjoyed the room. It was clean and provided all our needs. We had planned to stay 3 nights but decided to move on. The owner was very nice about getting with Hotels.com to get my refund for the other two days. It was much appreciated.

Owners were more than kind and hospitable, very friendly and clean with super comfy beds. Will be my go-to motel in Alpena. Sure beats the chains and restaurants very close.

Overall treasure
Super clean with an old school, up north feel. Good size fridge with separate freezer. Closet and shelf for keeping things neat and out of the way. Comfortable small chair and tv tray was a nice touch. Good A/C. Shower head/style and difficulty getting water to shut off was a little inconvenient. Although the little playground area is unique and very cute - there were several broken and unsturdy things and it backs up to a business with trucks and dumpsters.

Not charming..
Bed was miserable. Not charming just old and rundown. Not what I was hoping for. Bedframes stuck out from under bed. Easy to bang your legs in such a small room. Water leaked from sink and shower even after trying to turn it off. Not overly dirty though for price it was a place to sleep. Owners were nice. Hotel needs a lot of work.

There were four in my group with two rooms. All of us liked the hotel and would recommend to others, even though the motel is 70 years old the rooms are updated. The bathrooms are original, but in very good condition there are a couple of restaurants within walking distance, Only a few minutes from downtown, and very nice to walk across the street and be in the park on Lake Huron. Would stay here again without question

Big bear lodge
This is an ok place to stay for one night. Would not do more than that. Small room. Very clean. Toilet made a noise while filling up after flushing. Main door squeaked loudly which could be easily fixed. People that checked us in were very nice and friendly. No one in office at 8:45am when we left. Again, nice place but not for a long stay. Won't be back again

Cute mom and pop motel. No frills but very clean and comfortable beds. Bathroom is in the small side as well as the room but works if just needing a place to sleep. Owners were very friendly.
