Unfortunate experience
I was going to downplay the negatives but, given the manager's response, I've changed my mind. First, the basics and pluses...The hotel is quiet, easy to reach by train/tram from Schiphol, close to Vondelpark and a nice walk to Museum Square, in a pleasant area with many restaurants. My single room had a bed, chair, bedside shelf and overhead lighting, small closet area, and laptop-sized safe. The WC had a good shower. I appreciated the elevator to get to my 4th-floor room. Although breakfast is not available, there's a pleasant room where guests can prepare and eat meals (there's a supermarket next door and an organic market across the street) and buy coffee, tea or cold (non-alcoholic) drinks. The staff were super-friendly and helpful. Now the problem...On my second night there, I discovered cockroaches in my room. After the second sighting, the staff person on duty came up to the room and we saw one on the shower wall (I snapped a quick pic). He was very sympathetic but explained that I couldn't move to another room because the hotel was full. Still, he was determined to help me and called his manager to see about finding me a comparable room elsewhere. The room that the manager chose was close by but in a place with several cheap, dilapidated, cell-like basement rooms. It seemed bug-free but was disgusting! Clearly, the manager's concern was that he spend as little as possible rather than that I was treated decently. For that reason alone, I would never stay here again!

Very good 8.0
Polecam serdecznie. Byłyśmy z koleżankami na weekend. Korzystałyśmy z pokoi rodzinnych. Trochę mało miejsca, ale na jedną noc nie stanowiło to problemu. Pokój i łazienka bardzo czyste. Personel niezwykle pomocny i miły. Koło recepcji jest duża sala gdzie można zjeść swoje jedzenie i kupić coś do picia.

Good but could do better.
The room was a bit cramped with not much storage space. You could have done better than a slim wooden wedge for a bedside table! Also the sink was way too small to be functional--most of the water splashed all over the bathroom floor. Most of the staff were helpful although one lady, while well-meaning, was not quite sharp enough to remember that if I was travelling from London it would not be by domestic train! No complaints about the noise or heating. The room was scrupulously clean and I even had a change of linen in between by housekeeping. Suggestions include having tea and coffee-making.facilities in the rooms(very important indeed!) and making the sinks larger!

West Amsterdam Gem
great location, and even better staff. The location in west amsterdam was close to two tram lines, and in a nice neighborhood with tons of restaurants and pubs. The staff was awesome, and quite helpful. Nice lobby area. Highly recommended.
