Murataya Ryokan is situated in a really convenient location close to buses, shopping and restaurants. The owners make every effort to ensure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. The indoor onsen is fantastic after a long day of walking! Highly recommend their Japanese breakfast, it's delicious and not easy to get this outside. The care and dedication it takes to make it is just one of the reasons why this place is a gem. Highly recommend and would stay here again.

8/10 Very good

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights and enjoyed it very much. The staff was very kind and welcoming to us. Very hospitable. You must change into indoor slippers provided by the inn. Upon checking in, I noticed one of the elderly staff cleaning my luggage wheels which I thought was very nice of him to do so as I’ve been to a different inn in Japan where visitors were told to clean their luggage wheels themselves. I would’ve been more than happy to clean them myself but truly appreciated the hospital gesture. We adored the garden view from our room and we had lots of space! Our futon beds were set up for us upon entering and they were the most comfortable futons ever!!! I wish I could’ve napped in them if my time in Japan wasn’t so crucial spent awake 😅. My boyfriend also commented that their floor mattress were softer than the mattresses we’ve slept on in hotels across Japan. Showers and toilet rooms are shared. The sink to wash hands or toothbrush is lowkey in the lobby facing the kitchen entrance which is a bit of an awkward spot. I felt like everyone can see me when I wanted to brush my teeth. That was pretty much the only downer during our experience. I enjoyed the homey community feel of this ryokan though as both guests and staff would always be walking around. Keep in mind, walls between rooms are thin and we could hear our neighbour room talking but we didn’t mind. Maybe something to keep in mind for others!

Beautiful Ryokan
This beautiful Ryokan is well situated in the middle of the central shopping area, with accessible bus service to the train station and local sites. The facility is immaculate and charming with a lovely garden and very helpful and kind staff. Bonus is a private Japanese style bath. Highly recommended.

A fantastic stay in this classic old ryoken! Very atmospheric and charming, well located for easy walk to the main attractions in town. The staff were exceptionally helpful and attentive, with good English to compensate for our inadequate Japanese, and my family loved our stay - not least the onsen hot baths.

Solo-travel friendly Ryokan
This Ryokan is a solo traveller friendly. They have room to cater one person. The owners are very nice and accommodating. They will explain to you everything about the facilities in the Ryokan. I used hands free travel service in Kanazawa station and upon check in my luggage is already in my room. Toilets and Baths are shared and is not an issue actually as never experienced them being crowded even though the Ryokan seems fully booked. Surely will book again when I return to Kanazawa.

Clean, cozy, good hospitality
The ryokan was very clean and comfortable. My room was in good condition, and the bathroom fixtures were up-to-date. The ofuro (Japanese style bath) was small, but deep enough for me to soak up to my shoulders. There were a lot of little details that made me feel taken care of: they provided a yukata that fit me appropriately, they had perfumed the hallway with incense shortly before showing me to my room, they gave me good recommendations for curry restaurants and a sake shop, and the manager personally dragged my giant heavy luggage to a nearby courier and helped me send it to my next hotel. The staff were really great, I felt like they respected my boundaries, but when I engaged with them, they were warm and helpful. The manager spoke really good English. The rest of the staff spoke very little English, but with my limited Japanese and their patience, we were able to work things out. I felt very at home at Murataya. I wish I could have stayed longer!

Great service
The murataya ryokan was excellent. We can highly recommend it. The rooms are big, the toilets are clean and so is the bathroom. The best thing is the small onsen, where we could relax after a hard day of sightseeing. The staff always is very eager to help. Thank you, MURATAYA!

8/10 Very good

The location was great for me, as I spent a lot of time at the contemporary art museum that was a short walk away. The neighborhood also has many restaurants, historical sites, and shopping sites, and it’s a short walk to the beautiful grounds of the former feudal castle. The walk from the train station (35 to 40 minutes) was very pleasant if you follow the small street along the canal. The owners are very nice and helpful and speak English well. The Japanese breakfast was a real plus. I found it a little uncomfortable that all the bathroom facilities are shared, which isn’t always the case with ryokans. I guess the part I found awkward was that the bathroom sinks were in an open corridor. On the other hand, the smell of the tatami mats in my room was wonderful.

Worth the Stay
It's a cute little ryoken! The staff was wonderful. The location is right off the main city streets, so there's tons of stuff to do around. This is a great place to stay to get that authentic Japanese feeling.

Mediocre, but may be ok if you get it cheap
Very basic ryokan, more like minshuku. Bath was tiny tiny tiny. The place was very worn down. Staff was nice.

6/10 Good

The quality and standing of the property confirm the 2-star categorisation. However, while the experience was nice, the final evaluation was given by their strict policy on storing the luagages after 3pm. They wanted to charge us, which was not a big problem, but they had no standard tarif, hence we ended up into a negotiation debate.
