Exploring Berastagi

Situated between the coastal city of Medan and northern Sumatra’s Karo highlands, the beautiful town of Berastagi is a great place to use as a base for exploring Indonesia’s northern Sumatra. Its fantastic location makes it easy to go climbing and hiking and to enjoy picturesque mountainous scenery, as well as to see orangutans in the Gunung Leuser National Park. Berastagi’s main attraction is its incredible surrounding landscapes and the majority of visitors come here for just that.

There is little to see in Berastagi itself, whose name means ‘rice store’. Tourism is its main source of income, though it is also known for its lively fruit and vegetable market, in which passionfruit is the fruit of choice. The town has a population of around 47,000 and sits at 1400 meters above sea level. It offers picturesque views of its nearby mountains, including Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung, both of which are major attractions and make for great day trips.

Sightseeing in Berastagi

- Mount Sibayak

A stratovolcano overlooking the town, Mount Sibayak is famous for its hot springs and is one of the most popular day trips from Berastagi. The mountain attracts plenty of climbers though it is also possible to spend the day hiking here. Along the way, stop in the village of Semangat Gunung to enjoy soaking in its hot springs, and if you are tired it is easy to catch a bus from here back to Berastagi.

- Mount Sibanung

An active volcano found just west of the town, Mount Sinabung stems from the Sunda Arc and is home to four craters. Only one of the four craters is still active and its last eruption was 2010. This should not put off travellers as the mountain is ideal for walking and exploring the jungle. Once at the top of the 2,460-metre high mountain there are spectacular views of the world below.

Transportation in Berastagi

The closest airport to Berastagi is in Medan, with taxis being the best mode of transport. There are also buses that run this route, though they are quite packed and people often have to sit on the roof. There are public buses from Medan’s city centre directly into the town, and buses run along Berastagi’s main road to its surrounding villages.
