The staff make this hotel & are excellent, even down to the room maid helping me to the lift with my luggage. The toiletries in the room are excellent. The lounge is excellent -warm and welcoming.
The hotel itself is tired & needs a huge refurbishment. Frayed stair carpets, old fashioned bathrooms with shower heads fixed to the wall, extremely poor lighting.
Absolutely worst of all, the beds are the most uncomfortable we've stayed in in years & need binning & replacing.
The bed linen & towels are cheap. There's no mattress toppers & the mattress protectors are cheap thin nylon which barely cover the mattress.
The 1st night we got into the bed & realised the mattress protector was rucked up & we wouldn't be able to sleep. Upon further inspection, it was 2 single zip-beds, with 1 single nylon mattress protector simply lying on one side (so not fixed to anything) and 1 double mattress protector that needed binning, laid over the other side. The quilt was in fact 2 single quilts placed in a king size quilt cover. Very little sleep was had.
We moved rooms & the second night we were in a king-size bed, but it was more uncomfortable than the zip-bed of night 1, with the thin nylon mattress protector & springs poking into us.
We don't drink, but they do provide a free bar in the room with free-flowing gin, vodka & whiskey, which probably explains the high ratings on the reviews.
If you want to get drunk & sleep anyway, book this hotel.
