Exploring Rio de Janeiro

Brazil’s second city is a prime holiday hot spot with great beaches, weather, flair, and vibe. Known the world over for its fabulous beaches and carnival atmosphere, it buzzes year round, has bags of culture, and boasts some of the world’s most recognisable icons. Rio is best known for its amazing bay and granite peaks which are overlooked by the Christ the Redeemer statue. Some great eating and high quality, five-star hotels reside at Copacabana and Ipanema beaches especially, like the exclusive Copacabana Palace Hotel.

Options for activities here are excellent, with especially good surf in the winter. Volleyball is de rigueur on the beach as much as sunbathing is, while tours take in the city’s quality museums, parks, and shopping streets. This is the other side of Rio, overlooked by many, though it too contains much verve in its clubs and eateries, and has mega football stadia and cathedral.

Sights nearby

There is plenty to check out in Rio de Janeiro besides its brilliant beaches. It is cultured and has loads of palaces, churches, and galleries. Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf and other sites can all be toured from hotels.

Pão de Açúcar
More commonly known among tourists as Sugarloaf, this hunk of granite over the water is one of the defining images of the Rio de Janeiro waterfront. It can be seen from all over, with an especially good view from Corcovado and Copacabana beach. Access is by cable car from Morro de Leme, or visitors can get up here on foot and marvel at the views across the coast.

Corcovado
This is the high peak at which the monumental Christ the Redeemer statue stands. It is hugely touristy, but is a must-see for everyone. It is seen from all over the city and has grand views. The easiest way up is to take the old funicular railway and then the elevator. Walking is best done in the morning. Tijuca Forest National Park itself—where the mountain is based—is worthy of exploration if you are into trekking and wildlife.

Municipal Theatre
The grand Theatro Municipal resides right in the city centre—in Centro—and is one of the finest venues for performing arts in all of Latin America. It is most opulent and historic, modelled as it is on the Opera House in Paris, and hails from the early 1900s. The interior is resplendent and worthy of a tour in itself, seating a staggering 2,300 people. Most performances are good and tickets can be had online, while big hotels usually offer tickets and tours.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Rio has the best eating and entertainment in Brazil; think lashings of seafood and Carnival. It’s also big on steakhouses and prices for eating out are reasonable considering the city’s status. Kiosks line the beaches and are good for snacks and beer, while the main five-star hotels have some of the finest dining at an international level, like the Sheraton Rio Hotel & Resort in Ipanema/Leblon and the family-friendly Windsor Barra Hotel in the Barra district. Shopping and nightlife options abound in all areas, particularly in Copacabana and Ipanema

Public transport

Rio de Janeiro has a useful metro system. Although it only has a couple of lines, it serves the city and the main beaches. Tickets are cheap and trains are frequent, fast, and safe. Line 1 serves the city, North and South (Zona Sul, where the main beaches are at), while cheap buses serve all the main streets and are cheap, while licensed taxis are metered.
