Exploring Shenzhen

Renowned as China’s first Special Economic Zone, this wealthy coastal city is among the most popular domestic tourism destinations in China. Over the last decade, Shenzhen has developed into the most important city of Guangdong and has improved its international tourism numbers in the process. This is a great city for both single and family tourists as there are plenty of fascinating sights to uncover, including the entertaining landmarks of the Overseas Chinese Town, the bustling commercial industry in Futian, plus the many historic attractions that span the city. Furthermore, Shenzhen is a modern metropolis which is only a short distance from the grandeur of Hong Kong.

Thanks to Shenzhen’s growing reputation as a tourist destination, there are accommodation options scattered all across its main districts. Visitors looking for high-end hotels will be in luck as many five-star lodgings can be found in the districts of Futian, Luohu, and the western region of Nanshan. A large majority of these hotels offer excellent value for money. With Shenzhen’s extensive public transport system operating across the city, tourists are never far away from an intriguing attraction.

Sights nearby

Shenzhen is filled with a range of attractions which are close to a plethora of five-star hotels. Tourists will be able to find amusement parks, shopping, and historical landmarks only minutes from their room.

Zhongying Street
Found between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, this street is one of the most famous spots in the city. One side of the street is actually part of Hong Kong, while the other side is considered part of Shenzhen. It used to be a shopping mecca but since the opening of the Chinese border in the 1990s, its retail options have declined. Nevertheless, it is still a popular sightseeing spot, welcoming hundreds of tourists each day. There is a historical museum dedicated to the street’s timeline.

Shun Hing Square
Once the tallest building in Shenzhen, this 69-storey skyscraper is a magnificent part of the city’s skyline. The second-tallest building in the city includes a main building and a large side annexe. The skyscraper is mostly office space and is therefore only really worth visiting except for the observation deck at the top. However, the 35-storey annexe building contains five floors of shopping in an arcade. Visitors can walk to Shun Hing Square from the five-star St Regis Shenzhen.

Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens
In the Luohu district of Shenzhen is the Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens. This is arguably the most beautiful park in China, spanning beautiful hills and containing plenty of waterways near Wutong Mountain. Visitors should not miss the Hong Fa Temple. There are many different gardens and plantations worth visiting here, too.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Shenzhen is a diner’s delight. Thanks to its foreign influence, there are restaurants that boast cuisines from all over the world. The street food found throughout the city is Chinese but the hotels, especially the high-end options, provide the best international sit-down menus in the city.

Accommodation like the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Suites Landmark Shenzhen and the Grand Hyatt Shenzhen are home to exquisite dining establishments, not to mention grand bars and nightclubs. Head to Shun Hing Square for excellent shopping or the cheaper Dongmen Pedestrian Street.

Public transport

The city’s public transportation network is one of the more modern and effective transportation systems in China. The Shenzhen Metro is an underground train network that consists of five lines that pass through most districts of the city. Travel by Metro is cheap and most high-end hotels in Shenzhen are close to a station. Alternatively, tourists can take a public bus as most main streets throughout Shenzhen are served by the city’s inexpensive bus routes.
