Excellent accommodation. Spacious and comfortable. Could do with some new wallpaper, but otherwise a great place to stay

    Poor 2.0
    Don't bother about this place
Rooms tiny and old, in state of disrepair. Restaurant understaffed. Restaurant staff overworked and very grumpy. They are more focused on the chores rather than the guests. Breakfasts guests have to help themselves to cutlery. Tables left uncleaned. Staff forbe you off when approached with a question about the menu because you are not at the table she looks after. Menu confusing as to what is included with the items. Hot water thermos near empty. Staff so overworked that they forget to smile and be civil towards the guests who pay for their wages. I have traveled all over the world, this is the worst service I ever had at a restaurant in a hotel. Won't be coming here again. Not good enough for a tourist town. No excuse even having had "a bunch of tourist" at breakfast before us.

    Ambivalent impression
We stayed here for one night. I had been to Rotorua before, and had noticed this hotel due to its charming exterior. In a town where the construction of eye-wateringly ugly modern buildings is apparently a popular sport, Prince's Gate is a lovely relic from a bygone era. Positive: - The general ambience of the hotel is lovely, outside and inside. I do not regret having experienced this. Ambivalent to Negative: - Room sizes are constrained due to the age of the hotel: they are rather small by modern standards. But they are ok for a short stay, and the furnishings are mostly period authentic. - Staff are not particularly friendly. They are professional and courteous enough: but if you are trying to be decidedly upmarket, you do need to have that little extra when engaging with your guests. - We had breakfast at the hotel. The buffet was ok: but again not up to the standards of the sort place this pretends to be. And it was not value for money. - General cleanliness is all right, at least in the room and in public spaces. However, the hygiene of the hotel spa was an outright disaster, and actually disgusting. Given all the above points, the hotel in its current form is not really value for money. In Rotorua, you can pay less than half as much per night, and get a larger, cleaner room with a hygienic pool. But as the building itself has enormous charm, I do hope that they improve in the future: it would be a crying shame if this place were to disappear.
