The Majestic Theatre is a National Historic Landmark and San Antonio’s oldest atmospheric theatre. It’s the current home of Broadway in San Antonio in addition to a variety of comedy and performing arts shows.
Built in 1929 in the Mediterranean style, the theatre has undergone many changes over the years. Enhancements to the sound and acoustics in 1989 allowed it to host the San Antonio Symphony and touring Broadway shows. A major expansion in 1996 enlarged and modernized the space, making it possible to accommodate much larger performances like The Lion King and Phantom of the Opera.

Majestic Theatre highlights
The Majestic is an atmospheric theatre, designed to make the audience feel more immersed in the setting by way of the architecture, ornamentation, and projections. The theatre’s auditorium has towering glass windows, a projection of clouds that move across the ceiling, and a flock of stuffed birds watching from the balconies and flying overhead.
The Majestic was the first theatre in Texas to be completely air-conditioned, which was quite appealing in the 1920s South. During the theatre’s June premiere, every seat in the house was filled, with high-society women dressed in fur coats to attend the show.
